I've been meaning to post this up for awhile now but just kept forgetting to do so.One of the guys at work is building a SBF to put in a Mustang and one of the AFR (Air Flow Research) heads that came as part of the package deal suffered a dropped exhaust valve and the resulting damage.A few e-mails, a couple phone calls and a some time later we made the short trip to Peter's shop where we had the priviledge of watching the Master at work.  Peter was originally going to just so the welding but eventually Peter had to do all the machining.  Turned out the head shop where the owner was going to have the post repair machining done, new seats/guide installed and recontour the combusion chamber (as well as a complete valve job on both heads) couldn't do the first steps.  So, back to Peter it went.I'll let the photos tell the story except to say it was preheated to 350F and reheated as needed in the process and then post heated to 350F and allowed to slow cool for 30+ minutes.  5356 filler but I don't recall the rest of the details. Thanks again to Peter for an awesome job and thanks for looking.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Great work.....was wondering what type of torch he used to get (in) the port?my buddy had some vw bug heads that where cracked in there , but couldn't find a torch (I.E pencil torch) with the amp rating to do it........Thanks Red.Lincoln Percision tig 225 (Water cooled)Lincoln 350MP Power mig (with spool gun )Lincoln GXT 250 With Tig  ModuleLincoln Ln-25 Pro Dual PowerCentury 50 plasma cutter.now Lincoln .

Reply:Nice work, Peter; looks like you managed some real low porosity in your deposit there.  Did you have knowledge of what the alloy was to determine the filler rod alloy selected, or did you just make an educated guess to select the 5356?Also, did you do pre and post heating to reduce the weld bead contraction distortion? Thanks for sharing OP
Reply:Nice..Anytime I have to repair Aluminum heads I always use 5356.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:You need an expert machinest also.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder

Reply:i worked at a machine shop building racing engines for 4 years. and some of the stuff that customers brought in was ridiculous. i mean we're machinists, not gods! once had an engine block come in that was split right down the middle. turned that down.
Reply:That is some awe inspiring work castweld (Peter). Very few can do such work as well. Bruce. You get what you put in and people get what they deserve...
Reply:Peter:I have done some of this type of work before, but I would say your finished product looks better than mine.  After the welds were laid down, did you do all the shaping inside the combustion area with a carbide bit and sanding drum, or what?Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
