I see that most of you guys here are into hot rods. I like going fast too, but I do it in an older import. I have a 1985 300zx with a 3.0 liter v6 SOHC that has been heavily modified. It's current best is a 10.3 @ 134mph on low boost at Bandimere with a DA over 7500ft constantly. Makes about 600whp. I know a lot of you are not into the rice burners, but try to be at least a little nice. Anyways, I do all of my own TIG welding. I bought a Hobart TIgMate and just started learning. I am obviously still learning and always will be. Made mistakes here and there and learned from some of them. Here are my tubular manifolds I incorrectly made with no back purge, which utilize a quick spool valve. That is not my intake. That is one I made for a customer. Mine is similar though. There is this weld which I thought looked pretty decent but...Then this happened from the top of the intake manifold essentially "oil canning" from positive pressure to negative pressure repeatedly. So I reinforced that top of the plenum so It could not flex anymore and have not had a problem since. It has N2O, but I haven't run the nitrous at the track yet. 10pt mild steel cage. Here is the car before and after I painted it.Before.After.
Reply:Oh, here is a video of it running at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison/Denver Colorado. Elevation is like 6300ft, but the DA is constantly over 7500ft and not uncommon to see it at 9-10,000ft. http://www.youtube.com/user/satanz31.../0/leUB4PCv0mU

Reply:OH!!! On a side note, I just got back from putting a deposit on a Lincoln precision tig 185. The machine is practically brand new and I picked it up for $1150! I'm super fricken stoked right now! I can't wait till tomorrow when the bank is open so I can pull out the rest of the money to go get it!
Reply:Nice work on the 300Z.  I looked at a couple of these when deciding on a project car a few years ago.  The instrument clusters looks like it should be on a space shuttle.  Ultimately I decided on a Supra because I'm a big fan of straight 6 engines. There is no failure...only feedback

Reply:Hey DiabolicZ,I just sold my '85 300ZX (3) weeks ago. I hardly ever used it in the last (2) years since I have (2) Z71 P/U's & my bike. On crap days I used the trucks & nice days I was on the scoot. I've had it since '90 & had PA Classic plates on it. It was always garage kept from the original owner I got it from & I finally had to keep it outside last year as I expanded the garage for the welding/fab shop. I loved the handling, power, & it was superb on gas as I hardly ever jumped on it. It had 150K when I bought it & just rolled 200K when I sold it. Only on C/L for (1) day. Here's a couple pics....Denny Attached ImagesComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:Very cool!  I'm also over on Z31 with my "locost" project.
Reply:All makes are multinational at this point. You can buy a BMW made in South Carolina, or Fords made in Mexico. It's all about time slips. The timer doesn't care where the vehicle came from.Last edited by farmall; 02-22-2011 at 10:37 AM.

Reply:Thanks.... I just moved so im trying to take the "parking space" of a garage and transform it into a workshop.... So that is taking up any free time that i have     You keep up the good work!
Reply:I have a question unrelated to welding.... I'm thinking about painting my car a matte or satin tan. How do you care for your paint job? I've heard that you cannot wax it (obviously) and some people use dish soap to wash their cars. I live in Phx Az, so UV rays kill paint jobs out here. Just curious as to how you maintain yours. Nice ride, btw!Originally Posted by Skeeter McgeeI have a question unrelated to welding.... I'm thinking about painting my car a matte or satin tan. How do you care for your paint job? Reply:Wow,Nice car and nice work.  brings me back to when I was a kid and worked in a exhaust shop in the late 70's,man that was a wile ago, use to build exhaust systems for the z cars that had the chevy small blocks stuffed into them, big rage back then. I didnt care for it but i'm funny that way, u going to build a car , then build and run the motor it came with. But thats just me..Spent some time down there at Bandimere track every weekend, was working at a place in commerce city.back in 02. I have always been a fan of run what ya brung,,....even if its the  old hay burnersIf you see me running for no apparent reason, try to keep up:"Reality" What a concept!Miller Big 40 {1972} vintage, with 150 ft. of 000 leads, old Alaskan pipline welder.

Reply:Originally Posted by DiabolicZ10.3 @ 143 is fricken MOVING. We have some FWD honda's up here. They trap low 150's but only hit 10.0 - 10.1. You FWD guys trap really high but don't have ET's that match TYPICAL RWD cars. It always blows me away to see the FWD trap speeds. My car isn't really streetable. I can't pass emissions anymore so I have to run temp tags to drive it on the street. I run Hoosier drag radials for street use though. I run MT ET Drags for the track though. This pass was on 22lbs boost with a 74mm turbo. I spun a rod bearing though so I never got to crank it up to 30psi like I wanted. Oh well, next season is coming. My goal is a full second faster... Low 9's. I could have hit 9's on that pass, but my 60' was crap at 1.5 cause I had too much air in the tires (15psi).
Reply:Wait, YOU own Satan?  Badass car man, I'm jealous
Reply:Originally Posted by Ram48as you can see in the video we have some issues with the 60 ft times and are in the process of installing a small NOS system to help with that. We can ony bbuild seven Lbs of boost at the line with the big turbo and that takes about 8 seconds so we build it before we stage then brake bump into staging a real PITA. those runs were the 5th and sixth since the build so we were pretty happy it has more in it but we need to find out where its hiding.I really like what you have done on your car. Its pretty sweet.
Reply:I only like 80's jap stuff, nothing newer really.I got a 80's jap bike, solid, dependable and easy to work on.Other than that, I'm a muscle car guy.But I've always liked the Nissans! They kinda remind me of the Porsche 944's.I just love that long nosed look with offset hood scoop!Lincoln 125HD, yep I'm a big spender.
