1/2 round of slack in steering wheel. Sector shaft has 3 bearing surfaces, the 2 closest to the teeth were pitted (bad case of rust worms). The bearing surface nearest splines was good for use. Steel backed bronze bushings were worn and one in end cap was worn through. Welded piece of rod to t-slot end of sector shaft to machine a good center. Under cut the journals .030 and did not nearly get to bottom of pitting. Instead of cutting pits out ( looked to be quite deep) I opted to weld over area. I knew there would be some porosity but decided it would be OK in this situation- tractor. I wouldn't do this for a road vehicle. New shaft would be only option.Tig shaft with ni99 because, rust worms do not eat it, good bearing surface, cuts nice, had some. Preheated shaft to 600 degrees, let it cool in still air.Installed some steel backed nylon bushings, bored seal area for standard seal, reassembled, sprayed some rattle can color, reinstall on tractor. I'll put rest of tractor together Monday.Peter Attached ImagesEquipment:2  old paws2  eyes (that don't look so good)1  bad back

Reply:Wow, it looked like a total loss. You make these repairs look so easy. Great work once again.

Peter.Denrep's idea is a good'un.I have a similar problem with a Case-IH tractor where the cap in the centre of the steering wheel allows water into the hub and when enough gets in, it goes on down the steering mechanism. I haven't had steering box problems but the nut holding the steering wheel rusts badly. I took an easier option and drilled holes through the composite boss to let the water out. It still holds a little but never gets high enough to touch the nut or go past the star washer and down past the woodruff key. The mate I bought it off never kept the nut on the steering wheel hub, called it a security feature, as if he to needed leave it anywhere dodgy, he could pull the wheel off and throw it in the back of his Ute. However it's got a large post rammer on the back of it and when I first started using it, as I went up an incline, the rammer swayed back, causing the tractor to tilt back a little. I gripped the wheel a little harder and the wheel came off in my hands. I though all my Christmases had come at once! Next action was to fit a new nut. It was after this that he explained his "security measure" with a chuckle.
