Has anyone here ever welded the grapple teeth on a farmhand loader before? The tooth broke on my loader and am curious as to the best method to fix it. I am not sure of the alloy they used for the grapple teeth and when I tried to strengthen them with 5/8 x 2" flat welded to the outside curve the welds I did with E7018 rod would crack. The E11018 welds are holding though. Should I bevel it and weld it back with the 11018 rod?I'm tempted to take one to work and use it as a pattern to cut 3 out of 1" plate!
Reply:Finally got to work on fixing it tonight. Lots of "flowery" sparks when beveling it so am guessing high mangenese alloy. Talke to a farmer who'd welded his up, several times. Said his never broke at the weld, but rather either side, guessing at the heat affected zone. Guess I'll have to research my previous thread some more.
Reply:fourXFord I have welded them many times with 7018. I always preheat them and post heat them. I have also wire welded them and never had any trouble. One of my own grapples has 3 out of 4 teeth welded and they have held up for several years. Just make sure you get 100 percent weld penetration and dont overheat it when welding.
Reply:We'll see if it holds. I have been asking at a bunch of different sources. An acquaintance at work gave me a small handfull of "missle weld" rod. The description on the box said for unknown alloys, high carbon, springs, mining equip, etc. I've some logs to load this weekend, on an experimental trailer. If it survives I'll be sure to post a follow up |
