I figured I would post a couple of pics of what I work on here in Kuwait. This is Oshkosh HET. They have fully armored cabs and are made to haul a M1 main battle tank. Figured you guys might be intrested in them. I do alot fabrication of new parts for the trailers and every so often fix up worn door components. Attached Images

Reply:Got any picts of the armored CAT D9's?I'm guessing the 40 trailer tires are more for load distribution than carrying capasity. With that number you would have less than 2 tons/ tire excluding the trailer itself, which makes it less ground presure than a standard off road service truck.I'm also guessing part of the choice to use those in convoy escort is that they are less imposing than Strikers or other armored vehicles and therefore apear less threathening to the general public. I sort of find it hard to think you are safer in that than in an M1. But I know tracked vehicles take a LOT more mantenance than any wheeled vehicle not to mention you look like an invader rather than someone just going along.

Reply:Troy, First, THANKS for your service.I can relate to those things being a piece of crap. I can remember when the M-123,10 Ton tractor pulled my M15 and M15A1 trailers. The M-123 replaced the M-26 "Dragon Wagon". Surprisingly, the M26 looks similar to the M1070 in your picture. I've enclosed a couple of pics. 1st is the M-26, 2nd is the M-123, 3rd is a pic of the early M-26 with the trailer I had in Fort Knox- the M-15, and it was replaced by the M-747. The M-15 series of trailers were used for many years. The first came out in the 40's, and were in use up into the 70's.I was an instructor at the welding school at APG, MD when the first series of Oshkosh HET trucks, the M-911 were being tested. They were a load of crap then. I was talking to an old Army buddy last night via Yahoo Voice. He's a retired Maintenance Warrant Officer. I sent him the pics you posted. We're BOTH glad we're retired and don't have to work on that crap. I'll bet it's a bear to change the inside duals on that trailer. One question. We looked at the hood open in the one pic. Is the hood all the way open? Seems the engine is under the cab. Is that so? Can you post some more pics of that thing? Attached Images

Reply:Troy, We were wondering if the cab covered part of the engine and as you stated, it does. We also wondered if the cab raised (like a cab over civilian tractor)on hinges. You clarified that, it doesn't. Another "cluster f***" presented to the troops by the U.S. Army Test & Evaluation Command. In my 21 years in the Army, I can't count how many times pieces of crap were fielded to the troops that was junk. Many millions of tax dollars wasted. If memory serves me right, the M-911 required about 10 hours of maintenance after it was on a mission. You're right the M-747 was the first generation of the 1000 series trailer, or the predecessor to them. You're heavy maintenance. I spent 3 years with the 76th HEM (Heavy Equipment Maintenance) Co, in Fort Knox. We did it all too.Stay safe.
Reply:I saw one of these pieces of equipment for the first time this weekend @ Ft. Bragg. We were visiting our son. We saw them from a distance. He was not as knowledgeable about them as you are, but what little he did know let me know it is a cool piece of equipment. (I tend to only consider the visual impact not the maintanence aspect. Reply:^^-- On that note, and slightly off-topic, there's a magazine that was put out this month by 4-Wheel & Off-Road showing a bunch of rollovers, stuck trucks, and other funny stuff. The reason I'm mentioning it here is because there's a special military section (like the first 6 pages), showing Hummers, tanks, and other military vehicles (ASV's?) stuck in some very interesting positions ......The magazine says "Reader's Rigs - WHOOPS!" right across the front cover, can't miss it ....

I don't even have a welding trailer, I've been welding out of a FRESH for awhile. I only recently got a Miller trailblazer and Lincoln r3r 400. I anticipate calling on you for some help here and again. Well that be Okay?

Reply:Once (Ft. Drum, NY-1967) saw the main cable break on an M88 (trying to pull an M48 Tank out of a ravine). Left a 3/4" deep depression in the armor when it recoiled back against the M88. Luckily no one was outside the vehicle. These were the old M48 gassers that were in reserve component inventory at the time. The M88 was a flat out hoss.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
