I have been practicing welding TIG on stainless with my 250 Idealarc lincoln. I think it is a bit hot for the light stuff. Thought I might try with my 200 pipeliner if it will work. Do I need a constant current box or not? Thats what I was told I needed. Not sure they even make such a thing. I am sure I will find out shortly after pushing the submit button. Ha. Ok.. Here goes ........... Thanks Harold
Reply:No you do not, but it will be scratch start only.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I am scratch start with my I dealarc. Just thought I might be able to turn her down further. Got to let it warm up first. There aint any way it will start with a hand crank at 0 degrees. Ha.  Thanks David
Reply:Maybe there is a rheostat or something a guy could use to cut the amps down. Dont know. Never had this problem before when stick welding. Ha.

Reply:Like has been said already, your pipeliner is already a constant current machine. Whoever was giving you advice was refering to a high frequency box I believe. Your pipeliner will dc tig weld via scratch start as is. Your idealarc will go down to 40 amps. I've dc tig welded some very thin stuff with 1/16 tungsten down at 40 -50 amps with my idealarc 250. The high frequency box would be better matched to the idealarc 250 in my opinion . That way you could ac tig weld aluminum.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
