I have been doing these for a few days. 26 buckets total. 91 shanks. The customer removed the bolt on shanks. I burned the paint off the shanks and bucket. I then wire brushed the shanks and touched up the bucket with a grinder. I trimmed each outside of the cutting edge for the angled shank.Make sure they are all even and tack in place.Wire brush takes the burned paint right off, Down to bare pre beveled edge. Some prep workA yellow flame shows its burning the paint. It preheats things too. A notch for the outside tooth. Both sides, from the edge of the hole to about 1/4" deepI wire brushed all but the first one. Reply:Lined up in place and tacked.Wire is .035 Er70S-2 Its a 44 lb spool I bought to "try". I didn't like it and it will not pulsed spray on my machine. I am using MIG with c/25 for this job to use up the wire. 350 inches per minute, 19.5 volts. Pinch at zero. Lined up and tacked in placeA little butter., Straight in as far under the tooth as I can get. For the final pass I want to put the arc right at the edge of this bead and the bucket for good fusion.First pass. Bucket is flat, cutting edge is flat on bench. Its a horizontal weld filling a huge gap. I use sort of a U weave.Final Pass forehand pausing a long time at the sidesUnderside. I turned the bucket when needed. 2 passes, the first backhand or pull, the final pass fore hand or push.Total time about 1 hour 15 minutes each bucket.Last edited by David R; 03-08-2011 at 08:40 PM.Real world weldin. Reply:very nice!
Reply:Good work. You make it look easy.
Reply:Are they supposed to be that loose David? They look like they are designed for a thicker cutting edge. I realize you are just doing what they want, but am curious about the fitup.
Reply:hey david you always seem to be doing bigger iron so i thought i would ask you. have you ever ran ESAB's Dual Shield X-Series e70-1.. i have a bigger job coming up and this is the wire that i was told i was going to be running.. i would rather be using stick since im more confident with it.. i have ran a few test welds in a fillet and a vertical fillet thev both turned out great. i would just like to hear some more input for someone thats had more experance. thanks and sorry for hi jacking your thread,SIN CITY METAL WORKSvisit my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/devvon
Reply:As always, nice work David. You get alot of "fun" jobs! I have two 44lb. rolls of wire I want to use up. One .035 and one .045. Yeah I got a great deal on them, but they suck in a suitcase."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:I am surpized no one asked why they took off the bolt on shanks. You can tell just by looking at the bucket its a bobcat brand bucket. Bobcat's bright idea was to used bolt on shanks so if a customer ever breaks one they can just unbolt it and install a new one. But the problem with the bolt on ones is, all the stress from prying on a rock or something is transfered right to that one spot on the bolt. Which usually causes them to crack the steel right around the shank and rips a chunk of the cutting edge off. Been there and done that to far to many bobcat buckets for customers. So David is fixing this problem by welding them all on. The weld spreads the stress of prying rocks throughout the bucket cutting.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers

Reply:David,Is it possible your 0.035" solid wire didn't run in pulsed spray because you mentioned you were using C25 Ar/CO2 gas? Or did I mis understand your original post?Where are my customers who need 26 buckets fixed? (Just whining a little)Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:David---I can't remember when the last time was, if ever, that I worked on something that small, but do you have any problems with cracks when you weld all the way to the edge of the lip? I usually stop about an inch before the edge of the lip, then blend it just slightly concave and this has eliminated the crack problems in that area, little bigger components but a bucket is a bucket, i think?---Looks good by the way.6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers
Reply:Thank you ExpatWelder. I figure everything is hot by the time I get done welding those huge shanks on and it all cools together. Cutting edge is preheated some when I burn the paint off and heated well once I add all that wire. No I have not had a problem with chipping that I know of. I will not see these buckets again, they go to National Fuel Gas. Waiting for them to pick up these and bring me more.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:I used to weld those buckets up in Litchfield MN. Seeing the welders that came through there i dont think I would buy a Bobcat brand bucket lol. Reply:For applications such as yours, I usually run my LN-25(s) using .045 Lincoln Outershield 71M with 100% C02. Or, I may run the Lincoln 712C with 100% C02. It depends on whats available here in Hawaii . I have used the ESAB Shield Arc E71T with 100% C02 years back, and I was very impressed by it. I have experienced a fair amount of pinholes and worm tracks with the 71M outershield over the years. That can get frustrating. I only have limited exposure to Argon/C02 mixes for running wire. Picked up a bottle of Argon at a local supplier today that set me back $445.00. C02 is a fraction of the cost, so I use it for most everything wire related. I mentioned some time back, that I only run dual shield, by my choice. I can't stand cored wire on it's own. If I want to have a smoke.... I'll reach for my Marlboro's! |
