Reply:Manual pulsing too. It'd be nice to see what the bead looked like.
Reply:Impressive. Was that a TRAILER?!"SOUTHPAW" A wise person learns from another persons mistakes;A smart person learns from their own mistakes; But, a stupid person.............never learns.
Reply:Ive tig'd laying on my back under restaurant equip and operated the foot pedal myself.  Not a comfortable way to weld, but when you have to do it, you find a way.  I've done that with a helper operating the pedal too.  I'm haven't decided which is more difficult, contorting my leg to operate the pedal myself, or directing the helper to do it.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I've done that with pretty good results.  Tigging something thats really close to the ground that can't be put on the bench.  Sitting on the floor, crossing my legs while operating the pedal with my knee just like the guy in the video.  i think what made the result descent was i was in a pretty solid position.
Reply:In the sheet metal game we  had to do every trick to weld. Including balancing things on our legs. squeezing peddles between your thighs or with your elbow.  Every trick.  We also used thumb torches a lot, and button torches. You just modify your travel speed instead of the peddle to vary the heat.
Reply:Anyone technologically adept enough to film, edit and post the video on the web should also be able to properly light the area to show the bead he just laid down.  Simply using a flashlight would have allowed the bead to be visible which makes me suspect he probably didn't want it to be seen (i.e. it wasn't such a nice weld).Lincoln AC225 & MigPak 140, Lincoln Magnum SpoolGun, Miller Spectrum 375-X Plasma, Syncrowave 200 TIG, Millermatic 252 MIG, Miller Digital Elite, General 7x12" horiz/vert bandsaw, 3' box/pan brake, 20 ton press, milling machine, 12x28 lathe, etc.
Reply:I dunno... I'm tempted to call BS here.It has been my experience that way too many people use "Pulsing" while using a Tig, or a Mig as a crutch to compensate for a poor technique.Case in point, the Apprentice that is working in my Bay.  Can't run Aluminum with a Lincoln PowerMig 350MP and Prince XL spool gun to save his soul, but as soon as you start to walk away after setting the machine up for him (on Straight GMAW), he is switching to GMAW-P and trying to get all fancy - Because that's how HE "thinks" it is supposed to be done. The end result:  He buzzes like a Bee for a while, and his welds look like Birdcrap, and it falls apart.I have about the same opinion with the Over-use of any kind of "Pulsed" Tig Welding for anything other than its intended purpose.I use GTAW-P on thin Aluminum to help control the heat input to the workpiece - but I find what that fellow did in the video on (on what I am guessing is a STEEL trailer) to be just Goofy and entirely un-neccessary.I read all of his little captions, and explanations, and he seems to be another one of those fellows that saw enough on TV to be dangerous.Your mileage may vary.Have a Good Night. On edit: Back on topic: I have had to run the pedal in some pretty wierd positions too - Between, the knees laying down, under my knee, between my elbow and my ribs, etc etc, but the worst was between my jaw and my shoulder, while laying down.  It is REALLY hard on the neck after a while.Last edited by Black Wolf; 02-04-2010 at 12:13 AM.Later,Jason

Reply:You guys should really look at the video closer.  Hes welding with what is very obviously AC current on the underside of an aluminum tool box that probably had a mount or seam crack.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Back years ago before we received machines with hand controls, we used foot pedals on submarine piping jobs. Usually you had another welder there with you but sometimes not. I have run them with my elbow, knee and I'm sure other body parts.

Reply:O.K. I looked at it more closely and did notice some things I missed the first time.  Doesn't sound like AC to me. Sounds more like DC, with too long of an arc.  I also noticed where the smoke was coming from when he said "burn paint, burn." The jack mount."SOUTHPAW" A wise person learns from another persons mistakes;A smart person learns from their own mistakes; But, a stupid person.............never learns.
Reply:Gimme a break,  I weld in all sorts of positions, anyway I have to to get it done....that includes crawling, climbing....whatever.....but if it were me I`d leave the TIG where it belongs and grab the stinger.  A 7018 or even 60XX rod is far better at work on a trailer. Even if it was aluminum he was welding, them AL345 are all position.Papabear you are dead on with that long arc....sounds like he was having trouble keeping it tight like it should be DCEN on steel.
Reply:I'm just LMAO that the "world's greatest welder" posted this video as an example of something "exceptional".Guy in the video is anything but exceptional.  The OP is nothing but a joke (a bad one at that)Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:He was pumping that pedal like I had to pump the gas on my first car to get it to start! On a serious note I dont pump the pedal really at all on steel so i hope he is not doing it correctly because I have been doing it wrong the whole time.1995 supra 6-speed. 9.91 @148 mph on e85
Reply:Been there, done that. When he runs the foot pedal with his head while hanging upsidown I'll be impressed. (I think I might just try that some time )
Reply:If you also read the notes, it says he was welding on the jack.
Reply:As far as welding in impossible areas..And running a pedal with whatever body part you can use is nothing new.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:can the op be banned already? This isnt his worst post but if you've read more than 5 posts of his it's clear that he is a troll.
Reply:I think he has had a PM from the Moderators in the early days.He has become better than his first few posts. At first i found him annoying, but now i just find him amusing. There are others that make my hair stand up more. I wont add names.....(McJr, Kr#th,Pin#b)....they are a few that come to mind.Hey, people may not also like me, but i dont get told that often.
Reply:Come on. He not that bad once you get used to him.
