ive got a backup strip on and my filler pases look good but my root with the 6010 root looks good but when i bend it it has just a few little pin holes in it what am i doing wrong im doing this to practice for the open root test to get certified  1/8 inch metat plate 1/8 gap
Reply:Keep a short arc length and keep it hot enough.
Reply:wht amp do you suggest to be hot enough  iv been keeping a short arc with about  75 -80 amps
Reply:What size electrode are you using? I'm assuming 3/32" with the amperage you stated.Miller XMT-3502 Lincoln Power Mig 140C (One w/ dedicated spoolgun)Jackson NexGen / Miller Digital EliteMiller S32P SuperWeldcraft 17fv & 9fv Tig TorchVictor & Purox O/ALincoln Ranger 9Fairly Cold Beer!!
Reply:1/8 electrode should i bump my amps on up to 100
Reply:Based on your metal thickness you stated, I would try 100 amps although that is still a little on the cold side for that electrode. Keep adjusting your amperage in 5 amp increments in the event the 100 amp range is a little too cold. I do a tremendous amount of SMAW with a variety of electrodes, namely E7018 but also quite a bit of E6010. I am not completely familiar with the exact setting for 6010 on 1/8" steel but I do know your initial settings of 75 - 80 amps was too cold for that particular electrode. Let me know if I can be of any help...Miller XMT-3502 Lincoln Power Mig 140C (One w/ dedicated spoolgun)Jackson NexGen / Miller Digital EliteMiller S32P SuperWeldcraft 17fv & 9fv Tig TorchVictor & Purox O/ALincoln Ranger 9Fairly Cold Beer!!
Reply:If you are practicing for a open root test you should'nt be practicing with a back-up strip. That said, it sounds like you are long arcing or coming out of your puddle to far with you're whipping or not re-starting correctly. With a 1/8 plate open root 3&4G posi. 1/8 gap you are going to want a colder mach. A general rule of thumb is whatever you run 3/32 low high at is fairly close to 1/8 5p.  1/8 low-high= 5/32 5P and so on. Usually a open root test is a 3/8 plate beveled with a land so if this is 1/8 plate I'am guessing that it's for sheet metal shop? If so why not run it down for the root? When I weld with 5P with a back-up I very sedom ever come out of the puddle just run it like you're stirring with a spoon, out to the leading edge then back to form the puddle.      revpol
Reply:thanxs guys been alot of help
Reply:I just did this at school but on 3/8th's plate. Try a 37.5 degree bevel with about a 3/32nd land. Once you have that tack them about 3/32-1/8 apart and run your root as close as you can without getting it stuck and DON'T step or weave with it just run it straight.. i think i had my amperage around 85-90http://specific.net
