I've got some 7016 rods which are purposely made for open root welding - Kobe LB-52U. A lot of guys here in Australia use them as a general LH rod tooI've managed to gather enough info on open root with 6011 rods and a whipping technique but 7016s are not a whipping rod and generally require a tight arc and smooth motion to avoid porosity. I know a keyhole is involved with the 7016s but not sure of the overall technique.Cheers,Keith.
Reply:Last time I ran any 7016 was in the 1970s. For open root 7018 I use very little land / root face. I use 3/32-inch 7018, use a 3/32 inch drill bit to set the gap, the gap will shrink up a little. Run DCEN. Reply:Cheers CEP,I've got a few packs of 7016 but no 7018, although many like the way 7018s run. Here in Australia it mainly 7016 and it seems in the US it's mainly 7018. I'll have to get some 7018s and see how they differ.
Reply:I think you'll find the two rods run identical, but I seem to remember that 7016 weld appearance was just a little more shiner, almost like there was a little chrome in it.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400 |
