I just received my newly rented Oxy Ace tanks from my LWS. I'm thinking of painting these since I can have the same tanks again when I go for refill.Any suggestions what color and paint type to use. Is it ok to lay the fully loaded tanks on their sides while I clean and paint the bottoms. Thanks a lot.
Reply:No it is not OK.If you own them, you can paint them what ever color you wish. If you are leasing or renting (demurrage),you really should get written permission from the distributor.
Reply:More than likely you will not get the same tanks back, the LWS will just swap out your empty tanks for full tanks. If the LWS is filling "your" tanks from "their" tanks at the store you are getting ripped off, they will not be full, take a guage with you to check pressure on compressed gas tanks and weigh liquid tanks. I think you will find they are short.G3miller... 225g, s32p, 250x, 304, 12vs, MSW41 victor o/a thermal dynamics cutmaster 50 lenco panel spotter hobart hf-boxG3 Farms.....raising cattle, hay, kids and hell, ...oh yeah I'm a fire sprinkler contractor by trade.
Reply:If your LWS has large O2 tanks out back and you can see large finned evap coils then you have a place that fills O2 from liquid and you'll get a full tank, if they are using a cascade system with multiple tanks you are getting light fills. Regardless almost no locations fill acetylene and they are on a 1 day turnaround normally. But if you do paint them? you can lay them down, just put the acetylene tank upright for 30 minutes to be safe before you use it since the liquid in the tank needs to settle back down.jbman45Century 230A AC/DCLongevity 200 Multifunction MofsetLongevity 200PI Multifunction IGBTVictor Oxy/Weld&Cut5HP 2 stage compressorTractor; tools and 40 years of collecting fine tools.
Reply:Thanks fro your replies. What pressure should the oxy and ace gauges read for newly filled tanks?
Reply:That depends on the temperature, and what tanks you have.
Reply:i'm used to seeing around 250 psi on a full acetylene tank and about 2200 psi on a full oxygen tank. ambient temp will affect that some.
Reply:Thanks for all the feedback.

I think you will find they are short."I own 5 compressed gas tanks of various sizes and a 145 cf acetylene tank. All of them and the associated caps have a SS tag on them with my name, address, phone number and driver's license number on them. The tags are held on with SS wires and are positioned to be out of the way when installing removing caps and filling the tanks. The LWS placed their decals/stencils on the tanks and in their records and my receipts they are listed as customer-owned tanks. They fill the compressed gas tanks locally, but the acetylene tank goes out of town to be filled. No issues so far getting them back. Tanks are always 2200-2300 psig when returned to me. One of the tanks I bought on the internet (not from LWS) developed a valve thread leak and I lost a full tank of argon. The LWS removed and replaced valve, leak tested tank, re-filled tank for free, and apologized for not finding and fixing leak before they returned it. If I'm getting ripped off, I like it.Last edited by Teddco; 02-18-2010 at 08:18 PM.Reason: Forgot to add quote in first version.TeddCoHTP Microcut 400 & Invertig 160DC Smith Dual Guard MD-510 OA Rig Lincoln SP135+ Hobart Stickmate LX 235/160
Reply:Newbie question here. How would I know if my Oxygen and Acetylene Tanks are empty or almost empty and needs refilling. Is there a pressure reading to watch out for. |
