I have been doing more tig welding lately, but know I have a lot of room for improvement.  I am using a Lincoln Precision Tig 225 with finger wheel control.  If you guys could, tell me what you might see wrong with my welds. The first 2 pictures are of the side of a 2"x4" .120 wall square tube.  Both are vertical up welding, Torch below, rod above, moving up.  Settings are 3/32t, 95a, 25cfm.  The third picture is a little different, 1.25" round tube, 1/4"wall, .30 round plate.  I did a main pass at 120a and then did a beautifying pass with no filler.I know something is a little off, the color and look isn't quite right.  Any suggestion would be great.ThanksRobert Attached Images
Reply:not bad man.. nice weave while walkin the cup around the shaft/pipe/round-thing/whateverthatis... the first 2 pictures (vertical up) only needs more filler to it.. add another pass of 3/32 (or two, depends on heat) and it would be easier.. also, on the corners, suck your tungsten in on the outside of corners, and stick it out a decent bit for the inside.. and go faster.. hold the torch upside down.. wrap the tig hose around your arm.. well.. drape it over your arm so the cable runs off at your elbow rather than swinging off your rig..if you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room..
Reply:Tube looks very good. As for the vertical pieces, you look like though your heat is right, you might want to move faster. And, add more filler. Back shielding with tin foil dams might help keep the gas on spot, and will keep the color more like what you are looking for.A little more practice, and you are there. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:What the other two said. Though I can see your concern about the color. Faster travel may help clear that up. Or try Rojodiablo's tin foil suggestion. Really it looks pretty good.
Reply:Argon is heavier than air. If you are going from bottom to top, as you said, coverage shouldn't be a problem. You might try turning down your flow a little so you don't risk turbulence, which will introduce atmospheric contamination. Make sure you don't have too much angle of the torch. Keep the arc short, and as already mentioned, increase speed some and add more filler."SOUTHPAW" A wise person learns from another persons mistakes;A smart person learns from their own mistakes; But, a stupid person.............never learns.
Reply:what size filler are you using? 3/32" filler?  What kind of filler? ER70S2?  I didn't see it in your post.
Reply:Yep, 3/32 filler ER70S-2, but I have also used 2/32 filler on some of the other welds, just feed more. Thanks for the tips guys.  I will have to do some looking into the tin foil trick.  The round thingy is a mounting location for a bushing, it has a threaded hole in the end. Thanks again.Robert
Reply:on the first two:increase filler you're getting undercut at the toes.  This will also help with the color, and the concave weld bead. Also moving a tad bit faster and using higher amps will help you wash out to the toes and get a nice flat bead profile. Besides that just steady up your bead so it's even the whole way up and you should be good to go.
