Hey all,I have just resurrected the welding trailer project I had to put on hold while waiting for cash and materials. I have more materials (never have cash).I will update the original build thread before too long to show the progress. In the mean time I am wanting to start a thread here to share ideas for making your rig or trailer stand out a bit. Since your rig shows your work and creativity to your customers I think it would be great to share what you have done to make your rig have that "Cool Factor" that makes people stop and take a second look.I have not been able to figure out my main item for my trailer so I must abandon it but I will share it in case anyone can shed some light on how to make it happen. Basically my brake lights will be encased into a STOP sign shaped opening. I can still do this part of the idea but what I wanted to do was have the turn signals be a separate light so I could make the turn signal be a pointing finger in the direction of the turn. I do not believe my truck has the ability to send signals to a separate light and just sends it to the brake light. Therefore I cannot make this item work but thought it would be a really eye catching idea.I do plan on making a spider web bracket to hold my 5 gallon gas can. I will be making a small safe on the trailer. Basically a 12"X12"X12" box of 1/4" tubing from the scrap yard. It will have a door that is latched from the inside and one of those small post office box doors on it with a combination to open it. This is where I will put my wallet, phone, keys and other important items while working. This will be inside one of the tool boxes and not in the weather.Still trying to decide my method for mounting the torch setup. Thinking of recessing the oxygen tank through the floor so that both tanks are the same height. I MIGHT put them inside a box of some kind so I can leave the regulators on all the time but not sure.If you have ideas on how to create the cool factor, please share them. I will add mine here as I create them.
Reply:Bob, I've seen a lot of oxygen tanks in tool bodies mounted in a rack so it is laying at a 30* angle or maybe less. MikeOl' Stonebreaker "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:You would need a converter box to run separate turn signals from brake lights Bob. It is a 2 wire to 3 wire, not the other way 'round. Both are available because many trucks use amber turn signals, essentially you want amber turn signals on the trailer from a truck without amber signals. However, because of differences in voltage drops, some bleed over of signal is possible. This is why they make converter boxes with a "zero-drop" quality built into them. You can always tell the good ones because they have an included white colored ground wire to connect as well as the signal wires.http://www.rvtruckparts.com/ProductD...ID=192&CID=807The one in the link is just an example, and is probably not a zero-drop version.Last edited by tanglediver; 03-27-2011 at 02:33 PM.City of L.A. Reply:Here's my set up Bob. It keeps every thing out of the weather and you can keep your regs on. Also it will make your hoses last almost indefinitely. I made these almost thirty years ago. Attached Images
Reply:Also when figuring how to mount your bottles be sure to think about getting them in and out easily. It's more important than being cool. The O2 bottle is on a drawer that rolls out the other side of the truck. That size gas bottle is light enough to just pull it up and out by hand. |
