Someone on an old thread here at Welding Web mentioned that there are tip-size limitations in relation to certain acetylene bottle sizes/capacities.I rent a 9" diameter, 36" tall (33" plus the lip, at the recessed top) acetylene cylinder. My dealer tells me when it's full it contains more or less 3.6 cu. m. (122 cu. ft.) of acetylene.Okay. I don't yet understand how you calculate this, but what I want to figure out is if I can use a Victor #4 welding tip with the size acetylene bottle that I rent (which is a convenient size for my bottle caddy & for storing in my shop). For those guys who use another brand of torch equipment, the Victor #4 is recommended for welding fairly thick steel, up to 1/4" thick.I know the rule of thumb not to use more than 1/7 (now they say 1/10) of your acetylene in i single session. But that seems hard to keep track of... Anyhow, I want to determine if I can use that size tip reliably without starting to spit acetone. Also in regards to this question: is there a difference with a fresh, full tank versus one that, after weeks or months, is getting to the end of its acetylene charge? Thanks.
Reply:lol.. tip size ain't calculated by the size of the bottle.. it's decided by the thickness of the material you're cutting.. although a #4 tip will wear out a bottle in a day, whereas a #1 can make it last up to a week..if you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room..

Reply:I was just looking at that chart. Yup, that's 1/7 - 1/10th per hour. They list 10-25scfh for a Victor #4 welding tip. That's either ok for your tank at the low end, or a little too big, if you really open the valves up.Nope, no differences in the tank, until its empty.
Reply:If you are watching your flame the cone color will become a little darker blue and more transparent. You can also notice a little smell of acetone. I've never let it go beyond this and only had it happen when the bottle is getting close to empty.
Reply:10-25 cuft/hour is correct for a #4 tip. With a full bottle, you would be OK. Once you have used some of the acetylene you may start having a problem. Usually a oxygen/fuel tip will backfire (sound like a firecraker) and the flame will go out if there is not enough fuel being supplied by the cylinder. Numerous backfires will damage your cutting torch.OAdoctorwww.regulatortorchrepair.com
