I just got my used ($35.00) Weldcraft WP-17V-25-1 and I need some help figuring out what size gas lens setup it has and what size collet it is missing.  The gas lens says 1/8 so I am guessing I need a 1/8 collet.   Is the nozzle a large gas or normal gas size?  There is no ID number on it.  I do not understand why you would want a large over a normal gas lens size.  I was planning on ordering a set of gas lens for 1/16, 3/32 and 1/8 tungsten.   I am attaching the Weldcraft parts breakdown and parts number list so you can help me ID the parts I have  as I am not 100% sure if this is a large or small gas lens setup.  Common sense says large but chime in to let me know please. So if I get the three sizes should that cover most of the 150A welding I would do on 3/16" and down?  Is the 1/8 too large for my use?  Being that I will weld mostly mild steel is there any recommendation on which tungsten or should I keep a few different element make up tungsten rods on hand?   I do plan on being ready for any small gauge stainless that may arise.  I just want to be prepared and ready for any stainless, mild steel or carbon steel that may present itself.  I got a extra gas/power hose for $10.00.  It is a Weldcraft 25' as well.  Is that the normal value for the ones I see or is this more like the $45.00 power cable I see mentioned online?   I figured for $10.00 I would have a spare in case I managed to nick the first one or if I bought a series 9 tig torch I would have the hose already.I plan on connecting this thru the Miller 50 DINSE connector that has the gas line coming out the top.   Do I need an adaptor for this gas/power cable or should it fit the Miller connector. The hose fittings are 3/8 in diameter.    Also, if the gas lens is large then is the teflon part between the cup and torch large as well?  The back one is that a one size fits all?  Any reason why I should go with smaller gas lens setups over the large?  I am not making bike frames and I plan on only doing 90's and 45's for most of my work.  Maybe the large is good for butt joints and smaller lens would help in the tight corner fittings. Reply:Is it wise to have a long, medium and short back cap for these?  If I kept the short one, is there a certain length to cut the tungsten rod or do you order it short only?  I have seen the short ones online.    Let me know if the prices on this odd online store seem good. http://www.reliablepaper.com/WeldCra...rts_s/8784.htmMiller Maxstar 172 TIG (3ph)) converted to Maxstar 152 TIG (1ph), Harris & Victor Oxy/Act, Lincoln WeldPak Pro100, Radioshack 15w Soldering Iron but I want MORE and my wife says

Reply:I personally would just use 3/32" tung.  I've done from 1/4" down to the muffler tin on my snowblower and pop cans with 3/32" tung.I think when I got the gas lens for my wp 17, I got #23, #24, and #27.On the back caps....I have a long and a medium.  I think a long and a short would be just right for me.  I just use the tungsten untill I have ground it down short enough for the shorter caps.  Keep a few short pieces handy and when you need to get into a tight spot, switch tung and back caps.  Tungsten is like an old school #2 pencil, you can keep sharpening it right down untill you can't get a hold on it anymore. My name's not Jim....

Reply:Thanks for the fast advice.  I am not able to do Aluminum as my TIG is DC only ... sucks.  I am still trying to decide if I have parts 25, 26 and 28 on mine.  I am too new to understand by looking at the item.  If it does not say it on it then I am just guessing. Also, thinking about using the Chemical Sharpener for the Tungstens.  Seems pretty good.Miller Maxstar 172 TIG (3ph)) converted to Maxstar 152 TIG (1ph), Harris & Victor Oxy/Act, Lincoln WeldPak Pro100, Radioshack 15w Soldering Iron but I want MORE and my wife says

Reply:Turk,  you are right, no one has mentioned what size I have and I do not know if I would order the wrong size based on what I have.  I thought it was large as it seems large to me but maybe that is the normal size. I use HTP for a lot of my products.  Their online website is horrible with no prices but you can usually go to ebay to find the consumable prices.  You need to email them for a catalog.  Its nice and I have ordered a lot of MIG parts to fit my Lincoln with no problems at all.  Very nice people on the telephone. I was planning on ordering that kit as well... but not 5!   I am a overboard person too ... kind of a weakness or addiction?  I also have the problem of wanting to open up everything I own to see whats inside... am I the only one like this???Miller Maxstar 172 TIG (3ph)) converted to Maxstar 152 TIG (1ph), Harris & Victor Oxy/Act, Lincoln WeldPak Pro100, Radioshack 15w Soldering Iron but I want MORE and my wife says
Reply:I forgot to mention, I thought the large one had that knurled widest end on it (see diagram part #26) and I see some normal ones that seem half the length of the large one.Miller Maxstar 172 TIG (3ph)) converted to Maxstar 152 TIG (1ph), Harris & Victor Oxy/Act, Lincoln WeldPak Pro100, Radioshack 15w Soldering Iron but I want MORE and my wife says
Reply:Ok I managed to find the package that came with my 1/8" gas lans I just picked up a week or so ago. The number is 45V27 and from your chart that makes it the "small" lense. The knurling looks different on the front, but the front dia looks to be 5/8" like the one you showed, The threads appear to be aprox 3/4" across the outside. From this I'd guess that you have the "small" lense also. I can't find my small camera that takes the macro shots right now or I'd post up picts next to the tape like you did..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:DSW, thats great information.  Now I know to order the small set.  I can't imagine how large the large must really be.  It would be nice if someone could post a side by side comparison to show the difference and explain why you would want one over the other.  Are the series 9 torch heads THAT much smaller than 17 to be worth having around for small hobby tigging projects?  I am only able to push 150 amps and no more.   I realize the 9's are rated at 125 amps but if it is really much smaller it may be worth having around.Miller Maxstar 172 TIG (3ph)) converted to Maxstar 152 TIG (1ph), Harris & Victor Oxy/Act, Lincoln WeldPak Pro100, Radioshack 15w Soldering Iron but I want MORE and my wife says
Reply:Never seen the 9's. We had both the WP17 air cooled units at the tech school and the WP20 water cooled torches. The 20's were much smaller and easier to use. That's on my list eventually when I've got some spare cash or find a steal somewhere. I missed a deal last year at the LWS on one that someone had in for repairs then never paid for..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I have seen some 20's for not much on ebay as a lot of people seem to be getting the 17's.  If I find a good deal I will let you know.  I have thought about that as well and since I am a hobby guy, I will probably just connect it to the garden hose and let it go into the garden (after cooling of course).  I actually use rain barrels as well and I even thought about using them with a small 120v pump.  Hopefully that would work with any "code" in my area as it was rain water to begin with but you know how those code inspectors can be  Miller Maxstar 172 TIG (3ph)) converted to Maxstar 152 TIG (1ph), Harris & Victor Oxy/Act, Lincoln WeldPak Pro100, Radioshack 15w Soldering Iron but I want MORE and my wife says
