Hi all, been lurking around this site for a while, thought I'd jump in. Been welding with a stick welder for years, finially bought a millermatic 251 MIG. Building a welding table and thought I'd post a few drawings. The table top(plate) is 60 X 38 X 3/8 inches thick and has all 45 holes drilled and tapped--that was fun -- LOL !!! I have the angle iron(not cut yet), I do not have the round pipe for the legs/crossbeams yet. I'm welding tabs to the table bottom and bolting the tabs to the angle iron so I can disassemble later. Everything else will be welded together(base). The plate has a slight bow in it, about 3/8 of an inch in the middle, hopefully attaching the angle iron will flatten it out. I know it won't come out perfect like a machinist flat plate, but i do want it as close as possible. I have access to a full machine shop so the blue rings and legs under the table will be turned to size on a lathe and the ends parallel so legs should come out even and straight--I hope !!! There will be wheels bolted under the legs(I'm tight for room in the garage). I was also considering running power to the table, maybe mount a few outlets to plug in grinders, lights etc... will the 110 volt current mess up my welds?  Any help here would be greatly appreciated. First post here, going to try and attach some photo's, let me know if the pics come threw...Thanks !!! Attached Images

Reply:Seems like its gonna be a cool looking, and functional, table.Dave
Reply:Nice design and drawings. May want to consider:Do you ever really think you'll need to remove the top enough to justify the added work of making the machined tubes and such? And even if you do it's gonna be a job to put it on and off. Gotta have some strong buddies.Consider making levelers for the legs. Commercial ones heavy enough are expensive but can be fabbed fairly easy. The second important thing to a flat top is one that can be leveled and used as a reference point.I put a 110 weatherproof outlet on my bench when I built it. Never have used it. Just as easy for me to run off an extension cord, In a shop environment there should always be enough outlets to nearby. Reply:One thing we did to ours that is a great upgrade, wire the table with two or three electrical boxes in series, then run one extension cord to power. This way you always have plenty of plug ins at your fingertips. And no it will not effect your welding.moose13Last edited by moose13; 04-03-2011 at 06:34 PM.
Reply:If you want to straighten the top plate, be sure to use heavy enough angle iron. Taller angle will work as well or better than short heavy angle, but you also need to either have enough mass or braces ( for thin angle) to prevent the angle from trying to buckle if you have to apply apply a fair amount of force to straighen it. I'd go no smaller than 2" angle, and go 3" or 4" if I could. You only need the tall angle on the vertical leg so you could use an angle with 2 different leg sizes and save some money possibly.Interesting idea you drew up..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thanks for the comments, all taken into consideration.
Reply:This should be a nice table, you have put a lot of thought into it. A couple of things to consider would be putting full locking casters under it . It will want to move around any time you are wrestling with big heavy projects. You have a lot of clips under there considering that your plate isn't flat. If you are able to get bolts in all of them, you probably will never do it twice because the table will warp over time if you ever do any heating on it. You might consider just welding it down and be done with it.All of those treaded holes are going to need protection seeing that you are going to be MIG and stick welding or you will be chasing the threads every time you need to use one. A power bar won't affect your welding, but you may find it more convenient to hang a cord from the ceiling so it is never underfoot. When you post your photo's, be sure to include some close ups.
