I've been putting my new equipment to work.  This is a hydraulic cylinder for my pipe expander.  Started out with a leak because the snap ring holding the gland in blew out a few years back and I just welded on a plate for a temporary fix.  I figured it was time for a real solution.  I threaded the outside of the cylinder body, then machined a cap to fit.  Got that on and back together and the piston nut stripped out.  Rod came flying out and nicked a seal in the process.  So, first I cut the old threads off and welded it up.  I did the other end too because it had iffy threads and threaded sleeve as an adapter.  Sleeve was sloppy so I tossed it and built the rod up to full size and cut new threads.  No more sleave.  Back end of the cylinder was domed out so I cut it off and made a new thicker version.here's some pics. Reply:Anybody know how to get this piston out?  Looking for ideas that don't involve using air or hydraulic pressure to push it out.  I really don't feel like getting another ATF bath.Last few pics... Attached ImagesMy name's not Jim....
Reply:A threaded rod with a toggle might be able to pull it out if there is enough room for the toggle to spring open.
Reply:There is only about an inch behind the piston and the hole through it is an inch.  I didn't have any toggle bolts handy so I tried a threaded rod with a washer and wedged it off to one side.  Didn't work.....I may try making a toggle out of a piece of flat with an oval hole.  Not sure I have enough room back there though. My name's not Jim....
Reply:could you use a grease gun filled with what ever fluid to ease it out??  better than a power pump for sure!!-- fredLincoln 180C MIG
Reply:can you apply pressure to one side, ie   compressed air, and put a rubber stopper on the other and use a vac pump to pull , might work. the vac pump might work on its own,Mike
Reply:One inch behind piston, one inch hole...pump grease into thru hole, fill one inch void behind piston. Find, make, use a piece of round stock that just fits thru hole diameter. After filling void with grease, insert round stock into thru hole and smack with hammer.the compression should dislodge piston.Miller TrailBlazer 251Miller HF-250-1Miller MaxStar 150 STLHyperTherm PowerMax 380 plasmaLincoln PowerMig 180Millermatic 252Miller Diversion 180

Reply:Slide hammer with double hooks facing outward. Small wooden wedge between the hooks will keep them seated.Millermatic 200Hobart Handler 120Victor O/A & Ramco BandsawLincoln 225 ACSnapOn AD HoodMiller XMT304/22AHypertherm Powermax 1650 G3Lincoln Idealarc DC600 w/Extreme 12 VSMiller Digital Elite "Joker"
Reply:Nice work! What did you use to build up those shafts?
Reply:Here's a pic of a old home made tool and a cheap Harbor Freight puller set that would do the job. As for quick and dirty home made I'm thinking along the lines of a piece of 1/2" pipe with a bead around the end. Then split into four segments on that end. Take a piece of threaded rod grind a nut to a taper on the outside for the split end of the pipe. Use a washer and nut on the other end to spread pipe. You can then do several methods of pulling including using the threaded rod. Reply:nice work, what kind of lathe do you have
Reply:Boostinjdm, Not trying to sound smart but perhaphs you could try banging the cylinder on a chunk of wood. we had a cylinder in the shop last week with a similar problem and that's how we got the piston out. other than that nice job man. Reply:I got it out this afternoon with a beefy washer welded to the end of the threaded rod.  Wedged the rod off to one side with a wooden brush handle.  Braced across the end of the cylinder and used a nut on the rod to pull it.   An expanding arbor would have been nice.  I'll keep that in mind for the future.Mopar,Shafts were tigged with  ER70-S2.Ed,  Read my sig.My name's not Jim....

Reply:Fix looks good Boostin!I'm really not sure about that threaded adapter??? I suppose there's no way to determine if it was original or a pryor fix, but it sure seems strange. Thanks for posting.Matt
