Here is a pic of a 1950's Coldspot refrigerator I finished recently. It is sprayed with coat of 1957 Chevy Surf Green.Front wooden handle is from a tap handle. The part it attaches to at the door is all aluminum. I machined it out of round stock.Side tap handle is Sierra Nevada Pale Ale tap handle. All is pressurized by 20lb co2Nice fridge to have for friends! No fancy gadgets at all....except automatic ice makers cuz the ice constantly built up in the freezer section. If you don't mind sharing, what strip/prep/paint system did you use.Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor

Reply:Originally Posted by jackalopeYes these old girls are bullet proof so long as they don't get turned on after laying on their side!As for the paint, I had my friend shoot the paint. He used something called Nissen. We chose that because it will not see the "elements" like a car and it removed one step. Cannot recall the hardener or any of those details off hand but I know I still have the leftovers. I'll have to look and get back. Hope I remember to check.....it IS Friday afterall and I am going to give it a workout
Reply:Thats pretty sweet. I had a buddy in high school that took a fridge similar to that and made a kegerator out of it also. He added a tap to the front and put the co2 bottles in the freezer part, which was disconnected. The paint was pretty crappy, spray bombed red and blue and had some grateful dead stickers on the door. I like yours much better. Did you have to replace the compressor and condensor or what ever it is that makes a fridge actually cold? Or did it just happen to be in full operation when you scored it?
Reply:BTD, You are right, it is Nason! I do believe he used a hardener and clear coat. He does excellent work and has done body work for 50+yrs.Jwolf, Nothing was replaced other than the Aluminum lower portion of the handle I machined. Compressor and coil was all intact and it keeps beer ice cold!http://jackalopefab.com/MM210Synchrowave 200DXMiller XMT350 w/60series feederMiller Bobcat 250 with SGA 100 and spoolgunHTP PlasmaFull Machine shop with everything
Reply:My beerfridge is about the same age. Got any pics of the inside?Tim Beeker.
Reply:I never did take any pics of the inside. I did not repaint the interior so it is all original and still nice and shiney. I did break the bottom piece of glass during the initial move but it will be replaced soon. There is too much weight on it with a 40lb co2 tank and half barrel.http://jackalopefab.com/MM210Synchrowave 200DXMiller XMT350 w/60series feederMiller Bobcat 250 with SGA 100 and spoolgunHTP PlasmaFull Machine shop with everything

Reply:Wow, I need to take a picture of the fridge sitting in my in-laws kitchen! It is a 50s model GE. It looks very similar to that. Man, the saying "they don't make them like they use to" really applies to these old appliances. That GE fridge is built like a tank. It has been running continuously since day 1. The old ones are a better fridge in my opinion because they are just an "ice box". They don't have the air circulation fans so they don't dry our your food and make them spoil quicker.
Reply:They are built like a tank and weigh about as much as a tank. The real downside to these old gals is they are not energy efficient at all. It is a trade-off. Nostalgia/looks for efficiency.Granthttp://jackalopefab.com/MM210Synchrowave 200DXMiller XMT350 w/60series feederMiller Bobcat 250 with SGA 100 and spoolgunHTP PlasmaFull Machine shop with everything

Reply:Oh, and my wife never wants to come to the shop. I plan to keep the Beer fridge in my garage or in the basement when it gets finished. It just weighs so friggin' much!!!One other thing I learned awhile back....don't drink at the shop, for two reasons: 1) It is not safe, and 2) NOTHING ever gets done and if it does it is NOT right!http://jackalopefab.com/MM210Synchrowave 200DXMiller XMT350 w/60series feederMiller Bobcat 250 with SGA 100 and spoolgunHTP PlasmaFull Machine shop with everything

Reply:I just about bought another fridge the other day for another rebuild but passed. It was a Philco very similar to the one you have pictured. I have so many projects that I don't need another.I'd love to see yours cleaned up with a splash of new paint. Reply:very nice, any room to add another keg/tap ? i like the rabbit head, but doesnt really work with that color. maybe if it was a black fridge and added a few more stainless accents.im guessing its not energy star approved ?
Reply:When I bought my house there was a 42" or so wide oven/range in the kitchen, and if memory serves Kelvinator fridge in the garage. The fridge worked great, and could have really cleaned up well. I have airbrushed for a couple decades, and would have loved to keep the fridge. Unfortunately new inside fridge means old inside fridge becomes beer fridge, and old beer fridge has to go. Lost the Kelvinator right after buying the house. BTW, great job on the resto. My welder:Century 180 Wire feed welder.

If I need MORE beer, I will be in deep trouble!!And as far as energy efficiency is concerned, my is the "Energy DARK Star" version. Uses 100x the energy as a comparable size new model!
