Been really thinking about having this done for awhile now. What if any problems have you had afterwards, short and long term? What condition were your eyes in before? How soon did you get to return to welding? What should I expect to see when I return? What was your thoughts when you did the first weld after, did your welding perception improve? What process did your Dr. have you do?Think that's it, just looking for input and facts from others who weld before I throw the cash down. Thanks in advance
Reply:Had mine done 12 years ago..eyes were 20/200 and 20/400 before and 20/10 in both after. the op was a little painful, but well worth it too me. The only problem has been at night some bright lights have a star like shape to them and tear ducks dont work right, always have to carry a bottle of artificial tears with me. I always wear saftey glasses. But no problem with welding. Was layed up for three days and was told no to strain my eyes for one month.
Reply:I knew a guy that had it done and he couldn't see for sh!t to weld afterwards. If you can still make it with glasses...
Reply:I had it done in 2001 I think it was.  20/375 to 20/20. as for depth preception it was much better once it had healed.  one eye was 20/20 in a few weeks the other took a few months to stabilize and get rid of the ghosting at night from the lights...   I have not had a vision test in years but I would say i am prob down to 20/50 or something like that.  the surg I had was the one where they had to slice the cornea off and then zap with a laser.  now i think they have a process that does not require any physical cutting.   The cut is the cause of most of the extended recovery.   I will definitely repeat the proceedure if I need it in the future.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:I had mine done about 10 years ago. I went from 400/20 to 20/20. They say if you wait until after 40 years old that it will not last and mine hasn't. I am about 20/40 in my left eye and 20/80 in my right. Also I have to use reading glasses when I do up close work like welding. It's still better than wearing thick glasses or contacts. I tell people that it is the best gift I ever gave myself.
Reply:I did mine about 10 years ago.  I was about 20/60 in both eyes but had a fairly bad astigmatism.  I noticed immediately that while my distant vision was great I suddenly had a problem with up close vision.  I was completely glasses free for about 5 years, but then had to start wearing readers at about age 42.  Right after the surgery I also noticed I had a hard time seeing the puddle.  Putting a 1.25 cheater lens in the helmet cured that.  While my distant vision is still fine, I have gone back to wearing glasses most of the time.  I kept forgetting to carry readers with me and finally got fed up and had glasses made with clear uppers and progressive lenses. As for how fast getting back to welding, I actually welded a part the day I got home from the surgery.  My brother in law hadnt learned how to operate the tig welder yet and needed something welded real quick so I ran a bead on it.  I had surgery on a friday and returned to working in the shop on monday.
Reply:Good Grief... I had my first surgery over 30 years ago, was Radial Keratotomy, or done by hand with a micro scapel.  12 radial cuts and a T cut for astigmatism.  I wound up with 20-14 in both eyes but over the years it regressed to the point I needed glasses again so I had Lasik over the RK.  They are still good after 10 years, I do need readers, no night vison issues, I long Range hunt as well.I'd do it again in a minute and may.  I didn't think it was painful at all.  Kind of like having a weld flash...sandy eyes for a couple days.  Thats it.There is no guarantee that your vision will improve, in fact it may get worse.  Thats why you sign a 'hold harmless' and a release, but then, there is no guarantee you will be alive tomorrow either.....
