SMAW vertical weld from above?

Can someone explain or direct me otherwise on a proper way to complete a vertical weld when you cannot access the pieces from below?I broke my snowplow ( ... again ...) and my choice is to either weld vertical from above or overhead.  it is a fillet weld if that makes a difference.my gut feeling is that it would be similar to welding flat, with regard to the arc force keeping the slag out of the weld, but how do you keep the pool from simply dropping out?i'll get some pictures tomorrow, cauz i'm gonna need some help with ideas on how to fix some other stuff on it as well.thanks in advance!mike
Reply:As with all SMAW, it's all about rod angle, arc length, and knowing how to read the puddle. Doesn't rally matter what position it is in, or where it is. Reply:Bend your rod in a way that it will angle upward, may mean that you will only get use of about half the rod, but thats your best bet. So your holder and top of the rod will be pointing down to your weld area and the rod will be bent back on itself so you can travel upwar, Rod will basically be in a "U" shape. then just work it up the joint, it's not ideal but it will get it done. Reply:you just have to bend your rod. I've welded in spots where I could only use about an inch of rod, talk about a pain in the butt. Sometimes I cut them off short so they aren't so wiggly.
