It's a living ****ing Hell.  Assholes, and their Egos.  I am tired of firing people that challenge me. I am the coolest person on this planet, work wise to my men.  It is inevitable, like the sunrise.. that they will challenge me, sure as the sun rises.  Name a ****ing tool, name one.... and I buy it for them.  I guess that's the price I've paid for working with my "friends".
Reply:I guess you never heard of the concept that certain personality types challenge ideas to better understand them, not necessarily because they think there is something wrong with it.I hate bosses who think they are the single greatest gift to man on gods green earth, just because you're in charge doesn't mean that you couldn't stand to learn something from an employee every once in a while, or at least engage them in an insightful conversation about why your way is the right one.Nice pictures, what are those lines for?Have we all gone mad?

Reply:I can totally relate to both sides of the coin here.  I think I'm a great boss, like you, name a tool and I buy it, I'm laid back, never yell, I'm easy to get along with.  I've never fired any of my employees just for challenging me, I understand there is more than one way to do things and I try to seek out employees whom I can learn from.  All I care about is results. Quality is my main priority, I've said time and time again, take your time and do it right the first time.  The problem is when I'm under a deadline and an employee wants to do it differently than I specify, what happens when their method didn't work out and I'm facing a delay in production because something has to be redone?  Who has to answer to the customer and change production plans? Who has to pay to fix it?  I do.  I don't always have time to re explain things that we have done before.  If its complicated we will discuss it, if its something we have done before, do it as I outline. If I say I want something done a certain way its because I know it will work, I know how long it will take and don't have to worry about any of the above problems.
Reply:sounds like somebody has a case of " i am king lufkin, i am your ruler" disease.dave
Reply:While I am not self employed, I am of the opinion that if an employee isn't happy working where he is, he can always find work elsewhere.  A lot of people as of late do not have the capability to take the bad with the good, for lack of better terminology.  The guy that writes the paycheck's always has the final say and while it doesn't hurt to offer input, it is unwise to argue with said individual!  The best lesson that someone told me was "To do my thing."  I didn't understand it at the time, but I do now.  Know when to man up, and know when to be humble.  Take it like a grain of salt and get the job done!Last edited by mb_welder; 03-21-2011 at 01:36 AM.

Reply:I have worked many people over the years, and I have learned a lot.  I think it's always good to listen to what your employees are saying, you may not be able do what they want, but you may be able to apply an element or two to improve on how you are already doing something. Also figure out where someone's strengths are and let them use them. This will sound stupid to most people, but I have learned a lot about personality and strength test.  there are several test that are very good, and they are very right when it comes to someone's strengths and how they are wired.  All of these things can affect the overall moral of a companies employees.  Certain personality types may not fit in with the way a company has to run.  Example: f your company has to be flexible and your constantly going back and forth on different jobs you would want a personality that likes constant change.  The same would apply if you need someone to focus on one job for a week or two.More companies should take the time to figure out the type of personality and strengths, it would make their company stronger and their employees happier.Let your unhappy employees go.  It's not always about someone's ability, someone is hates their job will never live up to their potential; let them go they will be happier in the long run.  Someone who fits better with your company will do a better job, and will become a better stronger employee over the long run.  It's not always about someone's ability, but how well they fit within your company.
Reply:I agree with shawn and denrep. But, if there challenging him as in not doing there dam job or refusing to do something....then sh!t can them. But if they are giving a better way to do something then I say try it. I can see both sides of the story, but ranting on WW may not be the best way to solve the problem.
Reply:I was fit to be tied when I left work on Saturday night.  I should have calmed down, and perhaps not posted.  I was in a complicated situation, and someone was climbing all over me for things I have absolutely no control over.  As far as me having  some kind big ego... not even close.  When you treat someone like gold, and they spit in your face, it can get you pretty riled up.
Reply:I know one thing, my boss is a jerk. I work for myself too. I fired me once for talking back and it was definately unprofitable.

Reply:I get the initial rant for sure and can totally relate.  I give more (in relation to money available) than anyone I know that has employees.   When they lay down, steal, no show/no call, commit a major $ blunder, etc, its a blow.  I am lucky to have a group of guys that really appreciate the day to day job.  Not saying it didnt take 20+ guys in the last 3 years to find them.  Any of you that work for yourself, soley by yourself, thats great.  But its hard to really make big income by yourself.  Unless you are a brain surgeon.  I have seen alot of folks that make a good living for many years by themselves and virtually have little to show for it when they get close to retirement in their older years.  Not to mention, life slows you down and creeps on you ever year.  My employees have cost me many thousands of dollars over many circumstances, but made me exponentially more.  Its all about knowing (and learning) how to manage properly.Lots of toys.

Reply:Managing men has been the most challenging thing I have ever faced.I can figure out "things", but people... every one of them is different, and they need to be addressed individually.I'm still on  a steep learning curve, and I wonder if it will ever end?Denrep, I appreciate your post, and insight.Last edited by daddy; 04-08-2011 at 09:19 PM.Reason: spelling
