I wanted a boom pole for my tractor to move and lift stuff. I could have bought one but similar ones are selling for around $500. I also had all the steel I needed for the build. They also only attach to the 3pt hitch, that limit its usefulness. Step one for the project, straiten the bucket lip. It was starting to bendStep two add receiver hitch, very useful add on for many applications, add hooksStep three build boomhttp://      http://    http://Steve

Reply:Very interesting design, have you determined its lift capacity? Nice Job.
Reply:I looked at your pictures again and saw that you have tested it at 400 lbs.
Reply:Very nice.
Reply:Just a note for the future....................Never weld any load bearing component to the center of a piece of square tubing. The strongback/tesnioner you added to the top of the tubing is a good idea, they increase capacity many times over.  But the way you placed the center pylon is wrong.  It should have been welded transverse to the tubing, not centered between the shoulders.  The idea is to transfer the load to the side walls of the tubing, not the center of the upper wall.  It will tend to crush the wall. Reply:In addition, the pylon welded transverse will resist buckling when under compression"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:a piece of flat bar at each end would transfer the load across to the side walls and make an i-beam shape.  I know it's painted already but this would be a quick and easy add to strengthen it up.  Just a thought.John - Chesapeake, VA
Reply:Thanks for the input farmersamm. I should have seen that myself, but thats what happens when doing a design build. I think I will weld to two pieces of flat bar to each side of the center pylon like johnhalabama suggested. Thanks for the design helpStephen
Reply:That looks great!  I want to do something very similar to my tractor. Can you drive up and slide it in the receiver without getting off the tractor? My bucket is shaped a bit different than yours, so I'd have to alter your design for reinforcing the top lip of the bucket.  I have a Kubota M5400 with an LA1001 loader and the factory bucket.  Kubota rates my loader and pump at 2700 lbs capacity.  Not sure how much I could lift out on the end of a boom.I need to lift the pump house off the well occasionally, and the pressure tank inside the pump house is 6' tall.  The pump house is wood framed (4' x 4' x 7' tall) with masonite siding and insulated.  Probably weighs less than 500 lbs.  I need to lift it straight up 7 feet or so from a hook on the top center of the roof.  Been using fork attachments and strapping the house to the forks, but this would be way better!  I can see lots of uses for a boom. How long is yours? How much weight is your loader rated for, and how much can you lift at the end of the boom?LynyrdAn old redneck who lives out in the woods.
