cyl head repairs

Easy  repairs, funny story.This came from a NAPA machine shop a couple parishes (counties) away. The Sheriff Dept uses inmate (free) labor to repair their cars. The heads were on a Chrysler that had an exhaust leak. Inmate found broken exhaust manifold stud, removed manifold and tried to drill it. As you can see in pics he drilled half in broken stud and half in head. Can not tell in pic but he drilled into water jacket also. Supervisor decided that best deal would be to take both heads off, to repair goof and check both for cracks and resurface. Pics of second head shows valve cover rail cracked in two places. Inmate thought he had all head bolts removed but.... He used pry bar to unstick head and broke one area, I guess that did not give him a clue about the remaining bolt, so for good measure he broke the second area. Reply:OR, the inmate had an inkling that the head would have to be repaired, most likely within state, and decided to "goof" in order to help create some work and in turn "stimulate" the economy . . . . . . . Reply:Good old 4.7 liter , they are getting hard to find good cores . They seem to break where the chain guide pivot bolt screws in on the left head (be very careful ). Or they warp , since they allow no warpage it doesn't take much.
Reply:Sure the inmate didnt do it just for spite? I'll bet thats one motorpool where all the employees are disgruntled. LOL I am sure the brightest are not turning wrenches for the county for free.Nice repairs. Had a nice set of 041 vw heads that had a crack between the intake andexhaust on the number three cyl. Wish I coulda welded that, or known someone who could. Those were nice factory race heads. Don't think you can get anymore.........Mike
