Eh. This may be a stupid question and I apologize if it is. What type of welding is mostly used in pipe welding?

Reply:YupMost black iron carbon steel pipe is stick welded and most stainless steel pipe is tig welded. However, mig welding of pipe is slowly getting more popular.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Depends entirely on what it is used for, Natural gas and oil field is a lot different than say a dairy or restaurant.
Reply:It really depends on the size of the pipe and what the pipe is used for,We used to weld high pressure boiler tubes and the process was an ANSI and ASME procedure which required us to tig our root and cover with a rod and depending on the thickness of the tube/pipe determined how many passes.
Reply:pretty much everybody in the refineries is doing TIG/Stick on carbon steel pipe these days. You hardly ever see a 6010 on a job anymore, unless it's a pipeline. In a fab shop they will do MIG root/DualShield out on a rollout positioner. TIG roots on position welds

Reply:No 6010 in the last 3 refineries I worked in.Chevron - Pascagoula, MSConoco Phillips - Borger, TXShell - Anacortes, WA.you need a better fit to use 6010, bad gaps and hi-lo are easier to cover up with TIG .I think they like it considering the sad state of affairs regarding the quality of the pipefitters you get nowadays. |
