I've got a great, old, huge vise, but I bought it with a crack in the face. I'd be interested in hearing people's suggestions about how to repair it. I might not get to it immediately, but at least I can start thinking about how to do it.As far as I can tell the crack is fairly small, and constrained to the corner of the face, as in the pictures. I can take more pictures if it would be helpful, but I can't see any further damage.Keith Attached Images
Reply:for scale: that's an 8" crescent wrench... it's a 6" jaw vise.
Reply:You could vee it out and braze it, then file that jaw seat flat again.  Or just not worry about it.  That crack shouldn't effect function and was most likely caused by somebody pounding on top of the loose vise jaw.My name's not Jim....
Reply:leave it or clean it up and braze it up and call it goodthose are good vises i have one just like it at workMiller Xmt 350Lincoln Ln-25Ahp 200xSmith Gas Mixer AR/HTig is my Kung FuThrowing down dimes and weaving aboutInstagram http://instagram.com/[email protected]

Reply:Ok, I'll probably braze it. I think I'll need to vee it out, as mentioned, and I assume this is just a cast iron so I can use a phosphor bronze brazing rod... Thanks for the help. It is a great vise, though I haven't mounted it anywhere yet so it's not so helpful (it probably weighs 80 lbs).
Reply:Here's one way to fix a vise.  ChuckE2009 used a 7018 electrode, with pre and post heat treatment.....and it worked!  Very cool video from a talented fabricator!Http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMu-B62XLOILincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:Originally Posted by keithwinsI don't think a pure capillary action will work, since I assume the crack is dirty, and in my experience things have to be really clean for capillary action to work. I think I'll have to vee it out, and then either weld or braze-weld.
Reply:i'd vee that crack out and fill it w/ a Ni-99 rod after a good preheat . i don't like the looks of that dirtycrack - doubt if braze would wet properly as-is .
