I have been using this for about twenty years now and it's time to share the idea. This is very straight forward to make the smaller pipe is 1 1/2" Sch 40, the pipe it slides into is 2" sch 80 with a few "buttons" welded on and tapped with 3/8-16, a 3/8" bar is welded to the bolts that make the everything tight and locked inplace. The whole operation is bolted to my bench which is made from 2" angle. The top plate is 1/2" thick with a piece of the 2" pipe welded to it. You can almost get any angle you are after. For TIG welding this has been indispensable, I like to get comfortable and can sit on a stool and adjust the work to the proper height, angle it over or even upside down. You won't be able to put 500 LBS on this, but it is useful for most weldments I need and I've had 100 LBS or so on it. Once you have the basic set up it's easy to create special fixtures if you are jigging up for multiple parts, see the square tubing below. Holler with any questions.

Reply:What are the holes in the plate for? Slick idea!
Reply:nice. good idea those things are expensive. we used to have to weld a lof of fillet welds on pipe ranging from about 5-12 inch pipe but was usually pretty long (columns) but had no rollers. so we had to spin them while we welded them. i found a trick to it that makes it very very easy. but another guy made some pipe rollers out of an old fan motor a light dimming switch an extension cord some duct tape and some wheels. was pretty slick. we all thought he was crazy until he started using it and it worked!
Reply:I'll be adding that great idea to my welding table (yet to be made). I was thinking of making a stool with an adjustable peddle rest in it. If you go to a business supply place, they usually have a good supply of cheap height adjustable stools with the air chamber height adjusters. Great idea you had there.Bob.Miller Dynasty 200 DXMillermatic 211Hypertherm PM 600In Tool acquisition Mode

Reply:Glad you guys can use the idea.Martian--the hole were for dowel pins that could be used to position steel at 90 degrees. I did find that the top did warp slightly when the small section of pipe was welded to the bottom. One of these days I'll chuck it in my lathe and face it flat. Nicad--what a great idea to add an adjustable pedal rest to the stool, I like it and going to be thinking how I might do that.
Reply:nice and simple setup. i think i might make myself one.

Reply:That positioner looks pretty golden to me, is that table shown clamped up on it some out door ornamental? Looks pretty good.Matt

Reply:200mphbusa, could you fill in a new welder oldie on what you mean by " with a few "buttons" welded on and tapped" - are these "buttons" the "nuts" ? I'm in a more tourist area of the country and haven't come across these If I can't find them, can I weld on some nuts (they aren't zinc coated / not to be welded before grinding the surface or find some of those black ones ?P.S. just curious about your table - I see the red 2" angle going down towardsthe receiver tube, the other part of the angle I presume goes horizontal under thetable top - can you give a few details on what material the top is made of/was it bentat the edges and how it was mounted on the red angle ?Last edited by vjeko; 03-03-2011 at 01:21 PM.Reason: more info
