My friends girlfriends dad was a weldor and past on. So she gave me all this and a full "T" tank of argon. I never seen a regulator like this one, has anyone here? How is it compared to others? Pic 3 is one of the torches, a Union Carbide HW17. In pic 4 the back cap is cracked, will that matter. BTW, I have TOUCHED on tig twenty years ago, so call it as I know nothing."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Here is the second torch and hose. As you can see in pic 4 the torch body is cracked, will that matter? This torch is also a Union Carbide HW17. Reply:This is still the second torch. By the way it looks this has what I would think is a gas valve. In pic 1 it is slid out and in pic 2 it is in. Also because it is hooked directly to a hose makes me think that is what it is for. I don't know how old this stuff is, whatta you think the chances are it still works?"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:I have used cracked torches but it will depend on the extent of the damage whether they work or not. My guess is that they work. My guess about the two mysterious stainless blocks between the gauge and flowmeter is possibly a volumizer. I really dont know. It may trap moisture but thats just a guess as well. I am sure someone here will know. Torches are relatively cheap, (30 bucks or less) depending on what you get.UA Local 598

Reply:Man free stuff rocks, although it stinks that it is at the expense of a loss to someone. That regulator, if thats what it is, is awesome. You may need to really secure your bottle well with that sucker hangin off of it, it may tip er right over!Just another clown trying to be cool
Reply:I took apart the two torches and switched the cracked body with the other parts so now I have one perfect torch with a gas valve. The other torch will be fine, just a little tape around the cracked parts as it was just the plastic chipped a little. Both had gas lens', one 1/16" and one 3/32". The latter had some spatter on the screen so I picked up just a reg collet set up. Also today while at the local LWS, I found out that the reg is a two stage that the sales man said were very popular back then. He said "the thing about these old regs like this one is, they never break!" He said it was actually a high quality and popular because it has four scales. I hooked up the gas and the valve still works fine. I also picked up some 2% thoriated tungstens, 1 lb each of 1/16" 308 and E70S-2. So now I just need to get some start up pointers and try it out.And while looking at an asphalt patching job today I picked up a welding job on a stainless cart. I never welded on ss yet so I gave it to my buddy, but that will change soon. My customer has alot of locations and I'm sure alot of ss items break."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Good for you and your "inheritance". (Wish I could be so lucky.)And best of luck with your new endeavor of learning a new process. "SOUTHPAW" A wise person learns from another persons mistakes;A smart person learns from their own mistakes; But, a stupid person.............never learns.
Reply:Yeah, the two 'mystery' blocks actually ARE the regulator.  Two-stage regulator.  The pressure gauge reads the high pressure coming from the gas cylinder, then the two stage regulator drops the pressure down and then the flow meter lets you adjust the flow.If the torch is cracked, either fix it gas-tight or toss it.  Too easy to suck air into the shielding gas and get crap welds or just waste shielding gas which costs $$.  Also check the condition of all the gas lines.  Again, gas-tight or fix/replace.  Bubble test in some water is quick and easy to check for leaking gas lines.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:I've never seen that gas valve on a torch before, pretty slick Stick-Man.The two stage regulators keep a constant flow as the tank pressure decreases, and aren't as prone to regulator "frosting/sticking" problems. The cracked torch should still be sealed up in the barrel but will can leak HF around the crack and may try to arc at anything close to that crack.Matt
Reply:I put a few raps of Scotch 33 around the crack, and I will use that as a spare."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!!
