Hi all, I'm wanting to build a 4x4 foot welding table within the next few months, I've decided on a 3/4" plate for the top, overhang 3" all four sides, cut an x pattern in top for clamps, or drill and tap holes instead. Anyways, I'm wondering what size steel to use for the frame, and how the steel can be used most effectively. I'd like it to be able to support 2000 lbs. Plus the top plate (480 lbs) If anyone can suggest an ideal tubing or angle iron size, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Reply:You can use some box section 4 x 2 inch with some cross bracing, i was lucky when i built mine i was working for a company who had some 4ft offcuts The most expensive part was the 8ft x 4ft 1inch top plate  I wanted a large top as i was making a lot of railings and balconies at the time
Reply:I'm guessing that the 2x4 tube should be 1/4" (.250) wall thickness ?
Reply:On my table (5'x10'x1/2" top) I used HSS 3x3x.120 for the legs and HSS 2x6x.120 for the table framing. It's worked out well so far.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
