Curious to hear what you guys do in the winter when opening the garage door to let to fumes out isn't such a great option. At my work I am in a heated shop, 20x50 with a tall ceiling.  We have 2 ceiling fans to circulate the air around, and an old (recycled) household gas furnace to heat the place.  I added a Bryant brand "smoke eater" style high voltage ionic cleaner between the primary filter and the furnace, on days where I'm doing a lot of welding/grinding the primary filter gets clogged up pretty fast.  Curious to hear what other people are doing to keep their shop air a little less smokey and hazardous.
Reply:I just open the door. Right now that's all I can do.
Reply:Hood. Through the wall exhaust fan with some flex ducting to "extract" fumes when welding...Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP ( boat anchor )Lincoln Weld-Pac 100 HDHobart IronMan 230Cutmaster 42Jackson NexGenSumner Ultra ClampsDWM120
Reply:My shop is about 80'X 80' with 35' ceilings and I crack open the upper doors (see picture) to vent out the smoke if I'm running the plasma but welding doesn't usually get it smoky enough to worry about. One of my near future projects will be installing some duct work to the plasma's pantograph and above the welding table to use an exhaust fan we just bought. Reply:I have slots cut out along the roofline so i get some draught flowing in and out, Hot air rises, the fumes rise and hopefully gets sucked out by the artificial current i create at the top of the roofline. Works for me
Reply:I open the doors if things get smokey.  I wear a 3M respirator (pancake filters) when welding or cutting anyway.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
Reply:My shop is has cinder block walls, metal doors, and a wooden roof.  If I'm moving fast enough in the shop, and dressed apprpriately, the 35 degree weather isn't a problem.  I just have a small space heater on the fab table.  Works alright, if I'm right there.  If its cold out, and I'm only doing little tack welds with the tig, I leave the doors closed.  When I start welding, both doors get opened up.  If I'm in full-on fab mode, doors are wide open.  If I'm burnin' propane for heat, I'll have the doors cracked a bit.  I have no filtration.-AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup
Reply:my garage has 2 windows facing each other on opposite walls. i made a sliding door that let's me raise 2 panes in each window. i welded brackets to attach one of those plastic household dual window fans. if things get really bad i use one on each window. one pulling and one pushing. i have expanded metal tacked on the outside to discourage pests. i have a ceramic coil heater, no filtering needed.Last edited by docwelder; 01-28-2013 at 12:38 PM.Reason: spellingi.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
