I currently have three welding shields 2 of which are Jackson non AD shields and a basic Miller AD thats kept at home. Of all three there is something I like from each aside from the large propane tank cut in half style of the first Jackson shield. I've been toying with the idea of designing and making my own welding shield to incorporate a safety helmet and neck guard into it along with some other features for safety and functionality. One of the things I want to do is make the shell out of carbon fiber for lightness and strength but I have not found a clear answer as to whether carbon fiber once made into a hardened form is flammable or not. Would I be able to use a high temp resistant paint such as automotive header paint thats rated to 1,500F or is there a higher temp paint that I could use.
Reply:If you read the cautions on most units it tells to not to weld overhead. The only ones I have seen missing that message are the older and heavier fiberglass units. I have seen visor shields on multiple occasions buckle and melt partially from high amperage welding over 300 amps. Painting with heat resistant paint might help but often they are reflective which is hazardous to others around you.
Reply:Header paint tends to be a matte finish from what I have seen but that was years ago. I've already had to deal with melting a clear lense on my least favorite shield but plastic seems to be norm and well I didn't let the plate cool between 12 passes of 1/16 fluxcore I've already figured out a way to manage thermal transfer of heat through the shield casing and to insulate the electronics I will have in the design from heat and shorting but its going to be a bit before I can make the insulation given the cost of putting together the equipment to make it but if it all works out and I can get the lense made at a decent price I will have something I can go to one of the shield makers to pitch as a product.
Reply:I am pretty sure that CF will be no more flammable than any other material most likely less and I agree with you on that choice it will be much much lighter and I am pretty sure I have seen a CF hood somewhere recently also Miller TigMiller Mig Plasma Cam Hypertherm 100012x36 LatheBridgeport MillPress BreakShear
