ok, why is it no one will sell a large tank , I can rent them, but can not buy them?I thought I was going to be able to buy the 150 cubic foot tank size of acetylene but nooo, it is 75 cubic foot tank, is there a law in georgia regulating the sale of such a tank? I did a google but could not find a regulation or law on that....Anyhow they are literally forcing me to propane for heating (not that I mind that, I would just rather prefer to have one setup here not two.for the little work I need to do wiht torchesthanks!TomMiller Syncrowave 351, PC-300, WP18 Torch, Tec Spot Torch, Stick Hypertherm P/M 1000, 4*8 cnc plasma/router tablemiller 12vs extreme - might sell after 350pThe next lines left empty for more tools, P.S. Reply:If your going to be doing heating and bending propane is better, there are no limits on volume versus acetylene.  In order the run rosebuds and if you follow the guide lines you will need 2 300 cuft tanks for your acetylene supply.  It seems that what ever is the biggest tank that can be sold varies on location or company not state.

Reply:My local welding gas suppliers will sell me just about any size tank I want and this is California, where there's a law on just about everything under the sun.  I can't imagine Georgia having more laws than California. You may have to look for a used tank if no one locally will sell you a large enough new one.  Or you could buy a new empty tank from somewhere else and have it shipped, but that would be some money in freight, or do a road trip.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Google Mcmaster Carr, they only list up 80 cu ft online but they used to supply any size made in plain collars.Drives my gas supplier crazy.Call and ask for sales.Matt
Reply:No,There is no law, only a tightly controlled monopoly by gas companies on gas cylinders. Rental is big business.  They only sell the small ones to small guys who can take or leave welding and won't pay a yearly lease or monthly rental.  Leasing is cheaper. But it should not exceed $70/year/tank.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:I own all my bottles.  I don't see how leasing could possibly be cheaper.  The gas fill is the same price regardless of who owns the bottle.  I get bottles used on Craig's List pretty cheap and trade them in when I need a fill.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:At lease rates my little O/A set would have cost me $3000.00 to $4000.00 in rental by now."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:My local welding supply in NC told me that its a federal law on not selling the larger tanks.
Reply:I meant leasing is cheaper than rental....sorry.Sometimes, I know that some companies charge more for the gas in customer owned bottles since they don't get the benefit of the yearly money.   Then they charge you for the hydro test...Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Joseph,     Next time your at that welding supply have them provide you the exact law info, they should have it handy since its part of their business.

Reply:I have 4 tanks under lease now.  I always go with the largest ones because the price to lease the small ones is the same.  But they never charge me a test fee because the tanks are theirs.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:If you look around, you can find used bottles dirt cheap. Most, but not all LWS' will trade just about any bottle, charging a small fee if it is time for a hydro test. Airgas, and chain stores like them may give you grief if there is an owner ring, but the locally owned stores usually don't. Where in Ga are you? I just might be able to fix you up.Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!

Reply:It's not a federal law.  I can go down to my local Airgas tomorrow and buy a 330cf tank if I want to.  Whoever told you that is flat out lying.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:Gas distributers spen a lot of money on the containers they supply you products in.DOT requires 5 year inspection on customer owned cylinders where distributers fleet cylinders is 10 year retest.Yes the make money on the rent or leases,True customer owned cylinders have no neck markings and are typicaly escorted through the refill and retest process. The majors have a difficult time keeping up with thier own cylinders so dont be supprised if your C/O cylinders get lost in the process.Lifetime right can be a little different, sometimes a distributer will just swap them out with dock stock.Smaller cylinders 80-90 c/f o2 or shilding gas, 10, 40 or 75 c/f acetylene are common resell cylinders, but often are to small to be practical.Do your home work when purchasing cylinders from a private party.Find out where they are currently getting them filled and make sure thay will fill them for you too.Rosebuds or heating heads are demanding of fuel. All fuel gas cylinders that are liquid going to vapor will act the same, there will be only so much you can extract. As the temprature goes down the cylinders ability to produce vapor does too.Same with the liquid level, as it goes down so does the cylinders ability to produce vapor.Try using a cutting tip with OUT the cutting o2 flapper for a heating applicationJohn
Reply:Airgas here is precisely the company that WON'T sell the larger cylinders. They claim it isn't illegal, just against corporate policy.Last edited by lugweld; 04-28-2010 at 10:29 AM.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
