Our drive thru gate to the back yard was getting pretty sad. All built of wood and sagging. So I utilized some more of the 1.5 x .065 wall square tube I salvaged from the Yamaha ATV shipping crates in Idaho. That's right, I hauled it all down here when we moved. I made the hinges from 1/2" hot rolled and 1/2" pipe. I wanted them extended so the gates would swing outside the fence, so I used the 1/8"x4" flat for extensions. Once the hinges are welded to the gate posts I welded pieces of the 1/8" from the hinge back to the gate post to stiffen them up.  I orange peeled the end of the 1'2" pipe latch rod to make it easier to start in the rectangular tube on the other gate. The rest of the pics just show the hung gates and the finish. Too late I noticed I didn't pick up the gate boards in exact order on the right gate showing the old bracing outline. I did get them in order on the left gate. Someday when it's cooler I may swap those two out of order boards just 'cause it looks unique to me. It's so damned hot and sticky right now I just wanted to get it done!!  I planned to paint the frames and hinges brown but since I cup brushed all the rust off I just shot them w/ Flood Penetrol. So they're still brown and wont rust anymore. I wanted to see how the penetrol weathers anyway so this should be a good test for it.                                                      MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:That looks great.  It will be a lot stronger than wood.If you're going to have kids anywhere around it, you could run a diagonal cable from the upper hinge side to the lower latch side on each door, so it will never sag.  A turnbuckle mid-cable would let you tighten each side down. But that might be overkill for this application.Jack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:I could use one of those at the beach road boat landing..Nice job!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
