Well, I posted this once--sort of.  I had a first attempt, but after screwing it up to a certain point, I decided to start over and redo my cargo carrier from scratch.  I made some improvements on it, and am happy with the way it has come out.  I thought since the cargo carrier was new I would start a new thread instead of trying to resurrect the old one. Some of the pics show the carrier without paint, the others were taken during the painting process.Enjoy Attached ImagesThe Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --

Reply:Forgot to mention.  I overbuilt the cargo carrier. If I did it again, I would try and lighten it up; however, I believe this carrier would easily support 500-750 lbs... not that the tongue weight for my van would allow that.  Pretty sturdy   The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --
Reply:You did good. I see a lot of attention to little details. That's good.  I wouldn't make it any lighter. I know a guy that goes through one of the HF cheapies every couple of years. Reply:Looks very good. The only thing I would add, is some kind of reflective devices or lights.       Sincerely,             William McCormick
Reply:Turned out nice. Looks plenty heavy duty. Is the carrier far enough from the van to allow the hatch to open while installed? Are you going to put lights on it?

Reply:Pretty nice.  I like that painting assistant offset fixture arm you used.    Good thinking. As you most likely realize, the weak link in the use of the carrier is the Honda and the hitch/frame.  The vehicle down-rates the beefy 2 inch hitch down to a 350 lb tongue load, as you posted.  But watch out because you have a pretty long offset of your load away from the usual position of a hitch ball.I'd take a 'test weight' and attach it to the 'usual' hitch ball point and check the sag on the back of the minivan.  Then put the cargo carrier on and put the same 'test weight' on the carrier and see how the sag on the back of the minivan is.  Test weight could be yourself or a buddy standing on the hitch and carrier.  Also watch out for the GVWR on the minivan.  Many do not have all that high of a rating.  Put passengers in all the seats and you may only have like 150 lbs of 'allowable' cargo weight.  Just check the numbers for your vehicle to be sure.  GVWR, axle ratings, -and- the hitch load. Also, you should double-check what the laws/regs are for your locale regarding if lights are necessary or not.  AFAIK, if the load 'blocks' the vehicle's lights, then you usually have to put lights on the hitch.  Reflective stickers are always 'good', but they may not be sufficient legally.  Remember to put reflective stickers on so that they are visible from the sides/corners as well.Oh, and since when are there sea turtles in Utah?    (the 'family' stickers on the back window)  The best laid schemes ... Reply:Ya, I was thinking about the weight suspended out away from the hitch.  In reality, I don't think I will be putting that much weight on it (250 lbs + the carrier, which is around 90 lbs); but it would be interesting none-the-less.Regarding Sea turtles.... you didn't know Utah had them in Utah Lake???  j/kMy wife spent half of her life in California, and when her parents came over one time (when living  in CA), they brought those for us.  I have to say they are unique in Utah though... haven't seen any other sea turtle stickers yet.I may look into lights tonight... problem is I have to mow my lawn and spray some shrubs for aphids......  By the time that is done it is time to put the kids to sleep and the rest of the day is pretty much shot at that point.  Will see what I can do though. The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --
Reply:GVWR = 6019GAWR front = 2910GAWR rear = 3197Curb Weight is roughly 4400 lbs, and payload is roughly 1350 lbs.So, you add me (185 lbs), my wife (105 lbs), and my 3 kids (around 110 lbs combined) and the cargo carrier (90 - 100 lbs), and that leaves me 850 lbs more capacity.  I doubt I would ever load more than 200 lbs on the carrier, but if I did, that leave me 650 lbs for other passengers or stuff.....I don't know if that is higher than most minivans or now, but seems like I have room to spare in my case.   The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --
Reply:Never exceed GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating).  GAWR is the the axle rating (Gross Axle Weight Rating)  dont exceed this number either.  Easy way to find your weight is to load it with the family and what you expect to carry and hit a scale.  If there is a mill or grain elevator you can weigh it there.  The vehicle is certified to be safe at the weights on the door sticker, if you exceed them you could have handling, braking or tire issues.  Make sure if you load the vehicle to max capacity that you check tire wear and pressures as well as brake condition as these will be extreme safety items!

Reply:I stuck the reflector stickers on it last night, but didn't grab a pick yet.  My brother is going to be using this tomorrow, so when we load it up on his van I hope to get a picture of the "finished" product.I looked into some lights last night, but they are all too big.  Kind of clunky looking.  The smaller lights, that are runners on the sides of diesel trailers, are about the right size. Anyone know of small lights (for tail/turn/brake lights) in a single package?  That is small? The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --

Reply:re: weight capacityI vaguely remember adding up the weight capacity for a passenger vehicle (minivan) and added up the passenger weights if all the seats are filled by 'adults' (I think I used a nominal 150 lbs for an 'adult' figuring the guys would be a bit over that and the gals would be a bit under that  ) and was shocked that the amount of weight capacity I had available for other cargo after passengers was something like 150 lbs.  It was an eye opener.  re: lightsAFAIK, the small side-marker lights do not meet 'spec' as tail/brake lights because they are :a)  too small;b) not bright enough;c)  do not typically have a dual-brightness capacity (for the tail light function AND the brake/turn light function).I think you could tuck in some lights in the corners of the frame if you use the rectangular style (LED ones) instead of the big 'square' or round style trailer lights.  See the mock-up image below for one possibility. Also, what I have found VERY useful on my (store-bought) cargo carrier is tie-down holes in the framing.  See the mock-up image below. Reply:I added a set of trailer lights to my carrier. The set was under $30 if I recall. Simply bolted them on and plugged the connector into the vehicle. This gave me brakes and turn signals. If I recall the set came with some orange marker lights that I didn't use.

Reply:www.awsdirect.com has a huge assortment of vehicle lights available.  If you don't find something you like there, it probly doesn't exist.Another idea is magnetic towing lights.  They plug into the 4-pin flat trailer light connector and you can take them off and put them on as needed.  Since your carrier doesn't block your van's lights when empty and won't block the lights unless loaded quite high above the side rails, you'll really only need lights once in a while, unless you plan to regularly load it quite high above the rails.   You can get a set of magnetic base towing lights at most auto parts stores, moving van rental stores, trailer supply shops, or online.  www.etrailer.com is a good source for all sorts of trailer related items.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:Hi:I've been toying with the idea of having one of these custom fabricated here in Ohio and hope I could get your thoughts on some of my ideas.  My main goal is to have a hitch mount cargo carrier that could double as a wagon for picnicing, moving equipment etc.  The three things that would have to be different from your design are 1) a little bit lighter weight  2) a removable hitch insert (sometimes called a stinger?), and 3) the ability to mount steerable wheels.  The wheels and wagon handle would have to come off for travel both for clearance and because my car has a rear exhaust, but could be easily mounted once we arrive at our destination.    Any input you might have would be appreciated.Mike
Reply:Sounds cool, I wouldn't mind seeing it.  Nice thing about welding, you can make whatever you can come up with.  I definitely agree about making it lighter.... whoa, the one I built is heavy (gave it to a brother)The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --
