Hey guys I have spent a lot of money to get where I am as a weldor. But I have been out of work for about 3 weeks and decided I would take the next welding/fab job that came my way. So I was going to pick up some tungsten and some 6010 5p just for practice and randy the guy who owns the lws I go to aked if I had found a new job or contract. He refered me to a guy that was looking for someone  who could hardface, use a cutting torch and felt confortable with welding up conveyors and repair work. I said sure no problem.I actually love this job I get all the tools/toys I want or ask for and get to work as many hours as I want. The problem was the hourly wage was disgusting if I didn't have side work I would be forced to get food stamps and welfare. The pay is 13 hr and even though Itold him I would take it because he wouldn't budge on pay, I'm wondering why was he lowballing me bad.during the interview I told him the market price for someone who in the position deserves at least 18hr. This is really bugging me because I had shown him previous contracts and work performed at 34hr 28hr and my lowest which was19 my question to all of you is what should I do. I personally want to tell the guy 13 is bull**** and he could shove it. When good weldors take work paying that low it hurts all of us.let me know what ya think maybe I'm just crazy
Reply:don't take the job IMHO. Have you run your own business before? it is tough. Sometimes you throw all your money into a business and it fails and the people you hire wind off being better off than you. Other times you can do great, that is the reward for taking on risks. So there are two sides to the coin. Seems like you only see one, and if you can't emphasize with your new boss you'll wind up hating the job, so skip it, and good luck.
Reply:Unfortunately, welcome to the sh1ty economy.  What you describe is exactly why he can get someone to work for $13/ hr. To be honest, it's about $2 more than most of the guys who get out of the tech school find jobs at. There are simply too many guys out of work that NEED to work to make ends meet. That means employers can pick and choose and offer lower wages. Many of the guys with no experience can't even find jobs at $11/hr. There are simply too many guys with more experience who are willing to work for less. It's like musical chairs. There are lost of guys in the game, but fewer and fewer seats to sit in. It's just going to get worse I'm afraid this coming year as soon as these new taxes start hitting everyone..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Keep the messages coming. But I forgot to tell you the company is unico alloys and are making  record profits at the expense of cutting wages. The 2 men that held my position before me were union hands and made 32hr and his helper was at 18hr. What really pissed me off is the thousands of $$$ I've invested in being the best weldor possible and hours in the garrage practicing for weld test. It seems they want you to have 300 years experience but can only be 25 yrs old. It makes it very hard on anyone to see the boss man driving a 100000$ car nice trucks and all that **** but I see the employees with shifty healthcare and teeth rotting out of their heads and this ******* is making record profits
Reply:what's your location?how long have you been welding?Last edited by TimmyTIG; 12-30-2012 at 11:54 PM.
Reply:Tim I'm in Columbus Ohio. I usually travel the country making as much as possible but I have twins coming in 3 months so I'd like to have insurance and see my babies be born soon after I hope to hit the road again. It's supposed to be a happy time for me but its making me a old man before my time.with this wage by the time I get to a normal pay again after kids enter the world ill be 5k in the hole.
Reply:The union guys will probably chime in and tell you this is why you should be union. Of course the fact you can't get into the union won't matter...Chances are there's more to it than you want to make it out to be, but unfortunately, that's life today. They can demand that kind of experience simply because there are guys out there who have it, and are willing to work for it. If the economy was better, and there were more jobs, businesses would have to compete for good workers. Thus you'd get paid more. The way it is with so many places closing shop, there's simply more workers than jobs.To many businesses today are run by penny wise/dollar stupid book smart college grads who have never worked the shop floor. It's part of the problem with pushing kids towards college vs towards the trades. All they see is profits and losses. Quality, skilled and experienced workers aren't something that easily fits into a spread sheet. Granted a motivated skilled employee can crank out more work with less problems, but that doesn't show up well on paper, especially if there is little to no motivation to increase production. Most will simply keep banging the clock, and if it takes longer, so what?. This means that any "idiot" can do the work, so why pay $25/hr for someone to work the same hours you can pay someone 1/2 the money to do the same job? This country is seriously screwed up right now. Wages in many industries were way over what they should have been, when the "boom" was on. Now that there isn't the same amount of work, people still expect to get premium pay to do the same amount of work. It's not going to happen I'm afraid..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:I'm not seeing much to choose from in your area on Indeed.com, there is one ad for pipe welders making up to $22 for Tradesman Int'lMaybe you need to consider moving to Texas or somewhere on the Gulf Coast, plenty of work for welders down south
Reply:You have had it to easy, you said you made as much as 34 bucks a hour? How did that work out for you?You don't want to work for 13 bucks a hour?,then go on welfare then.If you want to have a job and some dignity, 13 buck is oktill maybe you can get something that pays more. There is more to a job than big time pay.Edit=weldor has 2 "E"sLast edited by Markcuda; 12-31-2012 at 12:24 AM.www.Markcuda.com"you didn't build that"weldor does have two "E"sOk,I stand corrected, there is a word "Weldor"But,in this day and age, how many frickin'times have you heard a moron use the term(spelling)?
Reply:This is the exact reason people are not getting into skilled trades anymore. The pay isnt keeping up with the cost of living and hasnt for years.. If you need to work, keep working, but definitely I would keep looking for something better, and when you do find something else tell him to stuff it up his As$.. Hell, lowes and menards probably pays $13 for a sales associate/stock person..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:I've considered going south after kids are born. But is it just me or does it seem that at that paying wage is be better off applying for food stamps free healthcare and govt housing plus cash assistance. It's pretty sad when that's what people do but I see it all the time here in Columbus.its funny when I see people spending foodstamps at grocery store and then they go to the doctor and don't pay a damn penny then you ask them well who pays for all of this and they look at you and have no idea that they are a massive burden on taxpayers and the men and women who support themselves
Reply:It's sad that what you say is very true today. I commend you for wanting to work and oing what it takes to support a family right now.The sad thing is if you knocked up your girlfriend and weren't married, you both be better off financially in this economy, especially if she didn't work... Like you say those of us with jobs have to carry those who don't. We have to cover ourselves AND them....No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:DSW you are so right. Markuda is one of those guys who says I live the high life because I Earned 34hr for 3 months. What he fails to realize is that's 28percent tax bracket to pay for people who have no drive and are the "victims" and I had to supply my own equipment I saved for years for my stuff. Now since I have a few things through blood sweat and tears he probably belives  hes entitled to my paycheck or have the govt steal more . I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees what's going on. Socialism anyone?

Reply:Hang in there. A job is a job. 13hr is better than 0hr. And here's what you do. Every part you fab, weld, or cut, take a picture. Gather as many pics and information on the part/repair as possible. Stock all these pics in a file on your computer. Once you have everything set, prepare a resume book with dates, machine, process, time spent, and so on. Send all this info to other companies asking for what you want hourly. What's gonna hurt? Either they will negotiate wage or simply say no but you will be on your mind. It's a technique salesman use to keep their product in the potential customers mind. Keep at it. Just move your name to the top of their "who to hire list" with every reminder. Hope I helped. Thanks for reading!

The educational requirements to work as a welder vary by employer. However, a welder candidate generally needs a high school diploma and formal courses in welding. Reply:I wasnt really gonna say ha bit$h I found a better paying job so suck it. But in reality I was thinking of maybe finding a better set of procedures to save the company money and also work 60hrs a week overtime does help. Maybe during my re evaluation date I can tell him I have another job offer and wish he could match it be respectfully and give him a two week notice if he can't match what his competition can offer. That's what I'm thinking right now.

Reply:Hi, I sympathise with you....the country going down the slippery slope etc.......and from all accounts it's going to get worse. One of the big problems with all economy downturns is that the products don't get sold so they don't get made, so there's no jobs for the left overs from the industry machine.I moved around 3 countries to keep my options up to my needs, but that's just me.....maybe you also need to look beyond the pail to see what the rest of the World has to offer, or at worst retrain to serve burgers at Mc D's.Have you ever considered that even though you've reached the top of your ladder it's leaning against the wrong wall?By that I mean, if your current employment method isn't going to work, change it.BTW, joking aside, the fast food industry is the only one that booms when the economy goes bust.Ian.Last edited by puddytat; 12-31-2012 at 08:02 AM.I have never worked in a trade so take this advice for what it is worth. While this advice may seem employer weighted it is reality in the economy as pointed out by DSW and others.>The employer already knows that you think you are worth more than what you are being paid. Prove it by consistently doing high quality work. The employer only really knows your work skills from an interview.>Try not to let the feeling of being under-appreciated creep into your daily work or relationships. Be pleasant, positive, productive, and self-directed. It may be an act but your future depends on it. Whining and personnel problems are a invitation to dismissal. When a better job becomes available elsewhere you may be able to ask for a reference if the employer saw your service as positive.>See what you can do to make yourself vital to the company's success. Working overtime, doing the crappy jobs, "going the extra mile", making fabrication or manufacturing suggestions will tend to raise your positive profile. At that point you will have more of the negotiating advantage that you seek.>By having this job you have your foot in the door. It may turn out to be much better than it currently seems. Keep a positive outlook on your future with the company.>You were looking for a job when you found this one so if it falls through you have lost nothing.>Thank you for your military service to our country. It is unfortunate this service does not count for more in our society. It says much about your character.

Yes 28 is young and you have a lot of life left in you. The first time i saw #2 she was four months old and wouldn't come to me for about two weeks.Take the job, and strive to prove yourself to the best of your ability and this should gain your a better wage. If the people running this country don't hurry up and fix some of the problems we have there may be a whole lot more out of work very soon and this job may pass you by.

Reply:I hear your pain for the pay you get,I've been in this business for 35 yrs now.Ive owned my own business and I've worked a lot of job shops.I have heard the same story for years. When the economy is like it is a lot of places either take advantage of a guy because they know its what the area supports pay wise or they tell you take a hike if you think you can do better.Im now at the age of 57 make good pay and good benefits .I sometimes look back and see the mistakes I've made and wonder what it would have been if I only had done things different.( I think we all do that ). My advise to you would be to stay put until you find that job that offers what your looking for.Learn all you can and sharpen your skills to be the best.Someone in time will see your skills and most of all your Positive Attitude.I also live in Ohio also.I still do welding on the side, my equipment is all pd for and the money gives me extra for toys.Welder99

Reply:Got a job should i be happy or pissedBoth. The mismanagement by our elected government officials is disgraceful and appalling. Not just now, but for many years (at least back to the Johnson administration) and both parties are to blame. Add to that, the economy does ebb and flow, and now more so than ever the global economy also affects (or effects, I never get that right) us here. One of the leading factors in American success has been the capitalist system: supply and demand. Unfortunately the way the system is gamed the regular working guy is stymied by higher costs of living, yet must take lower wages in down times. The demand for family or individual staples does not decrease as the population increases, yet the production side contracts as demand drops. That said, the bottom line is this: ask yourself if you are better off with, or without this job for now. Continue to polish your skill and build your experience portfolio, partially for your future employment, and partially for your personal self satisfaction. Feed your family for now and plan for the future. It takes a certain kind of man, with a certain kind of grit, to choose a profession that requires physical effort and sweat. That's something to be proud of when you look into the eyes of your children. I'm not a weldor by trade, but am in the same boat. Most importantly, don't let this blacken your soul. My frustration over my job and declining  income / declining living standard almost cost me my marriage. I had to step back and re-evaluate and while I am still frustrated, it is what it is and we have positioned ourselves with the lowest debt to income ratio we can to make sure we make the basic monthly bills. We did not have Christmas presents for each other this or  the past several years, just some for the kids, but the monthly mortgage and utilities are paid. I don't like it, but getting by is better than not. Reply:Thanks for serving.  How long have you been working there ?  Did the owner say anything about a raise after so many days ?? Do you have any insurance ? 401 K ? Is this close to where you live ?  Are you doing the same old thing that anyone could do ?  Maybe ask if he has something that's more challenging that would be worthy of more money ? Are you more efficient then the others ?      Times are tough today. I feel sorry and concerned for the youth of today including my own kids. I retired about a year ago as a union fitter welder at 61 . My pension and benefits are awesome. Is there any union opportunities by you ?  Did you and girlfriend consider relocating to a different state ? The Chicago Local 597 has a welding hybrid program that maybe suited for you. Here's their site. Good luck !     http://www.pf597.org/

Reason being , most of them soon proved that they were not worth 2 bucks an hour. As soon as they proved themselves they usually got a raise and benefits.

Reply:Keep the job for now, go in do a good job but I wouldn't bust my AZZ trying to prove myself. Your skill will come out in the day to day effort. Make sure your considering the whole package, don't know if they pay the Insurance and other bennies, if they don't , 13 don't go far.  Do you have skills beyond welding, General construction including welding and equipment repair seem to pay pretty good as opposed to a job shop.   Anyway , put your effort in and at least save up a little nest egg, then make your move. At 13 bucks, and both you and the owner/boss know that is low, I don't think you owe him any notice when you move on, I don't mean go out of your way to tell him off, just let him know it isn't personal , just business and if theres more money to be made, your gone.    On the other hand if he comes around and at least acknowledges your effort and sweetens the deal, might want to ride it out a while.  Good luck, and thanks again for your service."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400

Reply:I wanted to give everyone a update. I'm still at the same job. I have fabricated tons of things for the maintainence department to make lives easier on them and increase productivity. Im a good welder and so so fab guy. There's a crusher that takes large inconel and hastelloy scrap and turns it into rubble. 3 of the threads on the backside of it had stripped and they were going to wait 2 days to get it fixed. This crusher supposedly generates 20k an hour for the company. Anyways I said I could weld the door shut so it would operate and grind it back off when the problem could be fixed. Every one took notice even the head guy!!! So that was serious cash saved for them. Also a ring on this crushed that cost 15k snapped it was made out of 304 stainless. I beveled it out and fixed it. Again big boss man notices. But now I really don't know what to do because Wednesday I have a interview with a union wage job stick welding 6010 7018  I'm putting myself in a good position but still want to leave

Reply:When you do find another job...........give your two weeks notice.........smile and be on your way. There is nothing to be gained from saying that the wage is Bull....!!!If it was that bad maybe there should have been more consideration in taking the job in the first place!!!Never burn a bridge!!!
Reply:They can't buy loyalty for $13/hr. You know it, they know it, and when you leave someone else will take your place. They might not do the job you've done, but they'll take your place. If there are many others on the floor at that wage, whether they are welding or operators, you won't see any big pay. I doesn't work that way even if you deserve it. It's a common denominator situation. You need to be where the common denominator is higher and the work force is happier. Unfortunately the welding profession has gotten like drywall work. It'a ll about the lowest bidder with the cheapest labor. And that shows everywhere we go.__________________
Reply:The last two posts were great advice and agree with them. Take the job, care for your kids but always be looking for something better. I wish I would have earlier on in life but learned my lesson. My last job I worked for FLUKE (the multimeter company) for peanuts when I found my current job with LBC Bakery Equipment (the last remnant of Lang Manufacturing). The pay is better but still not the $22-40/hr I was making in Boatyards/Shipbuilding. I will possibly be moving to the Cincinnati area this summer to be closer to my (step)kids and will be looking for another job again. Such is life, but the best way to find a better job is when you already have a job to start with.
Reply:I wish I understood the question. Took a job, agreed to the wage. WTF is the issue?Don't like the pay get a different job.WTF are they teaching the kids today? WTF?
Reply:1) Go to the interview2) See if you are offered a job3) Decide if you want it4) Decide what pay you would need to stay at your current job5) Give your notice6) If your current boss asks what it would take to keep you.. you have your answer from step 4 (be prepared to answer)7) If your current boss won't meet your request, thank him for the opportunity he gave you and say noBe professional and firm.. don't be a wimp. And as DSW said. If they are pissed off because you want a better job.. you probably don't want to be working for them.
Reply:herbet makes some fine points. That's the way to handle it. The other point I wanted to make, and was sort of mentioned above, is that you are more valuable to a potential employer if you are currently employed, than if you are not. An unemployed person is hungry, like you were when you started there, and they knew they could offer a lower wage. And they were right. You accepted the job. But since then, you have proven that you could contribute major cost saving skills to them. If the big boss noticed, hopefully he will hear about you potentially going elsewhere at which point he will decide if you are skilled employee they will compensate higher to retain you.Best of luck whichever way it works out. And again, thanks for serving the country.PapaLincoln Idealarc 250 (circa 1962)Lincoln Weldpak 155 w/Mig KitLincoln Squarewave TIG 175
Reply:Anyone in Ohio knows what job I'm talking about I'm sweating over it kinda. Interview Wednesday. Test is 2in sch 10 NO PURGE ss tig. 4 in tig stick. And 6 in stick out.  The ss I'm worried about because I don't have any ss at home to practice on. I'm one of those people if I don't stay constant on my welding the first few inches look like **** and it starts coming back to me. They said 5 out of 100 people passed the test. But I told my supervisor I am going wed to the interview and his eyes got big and he said " your leaving us  already" it made me laugh because it was probably the same look on my face when they said 13hr. Any tips on the stainless w/o purge are appreciated
