Today's project, Repair sweep

This morning got a call asking if I could repair a sweep today. Nice big hot job for a hot day.  First thing is to get it in the press and straighten the shank. Large heavy it was a pretty good job by itself. No room to press normally so I had to do a inverted press. Single point on bottom and two on top. Took a lot of tries before getting enough. My gauge is messed up on the press right now but I know I was putting a lot of force into it. Near the max of the press. But I couldn't get a longer press area to cut the force down due to the way it was made. Reply:Even on a Holiday...Your neighbors must love you...What the hell is a "Sweep?"Looks big enough though.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Next on to the hot stuff. First shows what I started with. It had been repaired before. The owner told me who the previous repairer was and he passed away about 15 years ago. So the old repair held for a long time despite no grooving and using what looked to be 5p. I first ground nice bevels on everything and shimmed straight. I then preheated with large rose bud till pretty warm. Second pic shows first pass. The third is after second pass on top. Then flip and weld out the bottom with breaks to allow cooling. Then flip back and finish top with breaks. During breaks I worked on the blade. It had been bent and cracked. I ground the crack and bend till I could C clamp it straight on the table. Preheat and put a bead in the groove. Allow to cool while working on shank. Then flipped and ground to first bead and welded which is shown in 3rd pic. The bolted to shank after grinding mating areas flat. The point had gotten torn as shown in the 4th pic. Reply:Irish what I would give to have some of the equipment you have.  That press is just too big for you, I would be glad to relieve you of it to make room if you need me to.  I know, not in this lifetime right?  Oh well i offered, what else are freinds for.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
