I'm a newbie to welding.  Just a hobbyist that welds steel tubing to form racks, shelves etc. However, I'm needing to weld some 1/4" stainless rod.  I have a Millermatic 130.  With the proper gas/wire would this be feasible?  What is being welded isn't load bearing, and doesn't have to have great penetration etc, or look particularly pretty.Should I bother looking into getting a tri-mix gas, or should I just change out wire and see what happens? Thanks!
Reply:Just preheat with Mapp torch/ propane. Get it hot enough to hiss when you spit on it, and you will get a clean puddle going. The biggest problem is getting a spot hot enough to penetrate; the small welders just make piles of welds on top of the metal. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:1/4" rod will heat up quick, not much mass there.  Technically you should be using a tri-mix gas and stainless wire, but if you don't care about rust resistance and this is all the stainless welding you want to do, you can weld it with your argon/co2 mix gas and use mild steel wire and the thing will hold together for your purposes.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
