My local supply house has sealable rod holders, the kind with an o-ring to keep moisture away from lo-hi rods. The only problem is that they are plastic, and a rather thin plastic with a low melting point at that.  You put your rods in a kiln to bake them off, then you can't put them in your rod holder because it's plastic. What's the deal with that?  Are there any sealable rod holders that are made from metal?
Reply:Just get a rod caddy or a rod pouch. I believe lo-hi rods can be out of an oven for up to 4hrs.
Reply:I'll give you a  hint $$$$ to why they are pla$tic.   Also probably a weight thingWe always make our own, go to home depot get some 3-4" thin scehdule pipe, have them thread it for you and buy 2 caps.  I suppose you only need 1 cap and you can weld the other end shut if you want.  They'll do the cuts and threads for about $1 each so it shouldn't be that expensive I'm sure you could buy an oring too but that seems like overkill. If you get a pipe thread on them they'll survive a tsunami and still be dry.We made all our own rod holders out of pvc pipe from the hardware store. Color coded for different rods. Much cheaper and faster than buying them. And as mentioned once they are taken out of the oven the 4 hour time limit is imposed if you used a sealed holder or not. The only way around that is buying the portable rod ovens that keep them at temperature.Welding EngineerCertified Scrap Producer
Reply:If your storing your 7018 rods in a rod oven, pull them out of the oven and place them into a metal pail for your job for the day. I thought the rods could be out of the oven for 8 hrs and still weld to code? At the end of the day, place your unused rods back into the oven.No need to use a plastic storage tube if you are using a rod oven to condition your rods in my opinion.I use a plastic storage tube with an absorbant desicant at home to store my opened 7018 (no oven). At work the 7018 comes out of the oven and go into a metal pail for the day.Last edited by snoeproe; 05-24-2010 at 08:54 PM.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:I'm not staring at the code right now but I'm about 90% certain that it states as soon as it leaves oven temperature the 4 hour timer starts.  You can get quiver sized electric ovens to keep the rods that hot.  you might be able to get a waiver with some type of sealed and dessicant packed portable rod holder, but with all the trouble is it worth it? carry enough rods for 4 hours, and walk back to the tool crib twice a shift. not too hard.Welding EngineerCertified Scrap Producer
