So today I decided to go out and do some practice, decided to make an ashtray just to do something other than weld on flat plate, got my new roll of flux wire, set it up and started to weld.....but it wasn't working properly, welds coming out like sh1t. I'll attach photos of a weld I done with the old wire and one with the new wire, the old is no masterpiece but nowhere near as rough as the new welds. So I scratched my head for a while, it was forming "bubbly" like, with no slag and sometimes small black bits around it . So I went to the place I bought it from but they are a motor accessories shop so the don't really know much, so then I had to ring someone from Sealey for help, his conclusion was that it must have been a flux error in the production and a new roll will be sent out tomorrow. So that's atleast one problem solved (hopefully)Then my chipping hammer decided to break and I'm not sure what it's made of, I tried to weld it back together but it wouldn't stick, not sure if that's the sh1tty wire. So i spent the day trying to botch together joints and then grind them down so I'm sorry but no pics of welds on the actual "project". And just for fun after it all i decided to see if it could hold water....but no  because the wire was coming out in bubbles and leavin lots of holes. Has anyone else ever got a bad roll of flux wire? Really annoying when I though I was going to be productive and practice. Attached Images
Reply:oh and it's 5mm thick material incase anyone is curious (only thing in the shed) Attached Images
Reply:send that chiping hammer over, I'll weld that for you --------------------------------------------------------------www.becmotors.nlyup, I quit welding.. joined welder anonymous
Reply:I've run a lot of flux core in my 110v MIG and haven't really had a "bad" roll, although I have had a couple that were just weird.  Seems like it was Hobart branded wire that I didn't like, could just be my machine though.  My favorite wire to run is US Forge .030 from Menards (not that you have that store in Ireland, but just for reference.)
Reply:Ok so this morning I went and picked up the new roll that was sent out for me, came home..put it in the machine...and the exact same thing happened  I couldn't figure it out atal so I went to a different place and bought a .45kg roll (same size that came with the welder) came home and tried that and it's working normal again  are there any differences in .45kg and .9kg wire? I thought it just meant there was more wire but looking at the rolls they look the same size? Anyway I managed to weld my chipping hammer back together and finish the most "rough and ready" ashtray known to man  The most annoying part was that I can't get inside it with a grinder to clean the spatter and sh1tty welds, I tried a dremel but that wasn't much good atal lol  It's no pretty sight but it's the first thing I've welded together so onwards and upwards from here....hopefully ha Attached Images
