any suggestions on repairing a wrought iron leg vise. the crack is by the top of the leg and its a1/4 inch through. my big concern is rod choise. 7018or iron/nickel type rodlincoln weld pak 100 hdlincoln ranger 225gxt ac/dcoxy/acetylenepuroxcw202 victor fc100harris model 85harrismodel 16oxweld w24roxweld w17
Reply:Are you sure it's wrought, or maybe malleable cast instead? The first has very low carbon (but possibly slag inclusions) so isn't 'fussy' about compatibility of rod, while the second is.
Reply:not sure. i hit it w the grinder and the sparks were reddish orange . not a huge shower of them iether.its a blacksmiths vise that was in production from the late 1800s to mid1920s .thats about all i know of it.the mounting plates been welded before, looks like a 6011 was used but maybee its different materiaj than the vicelincoln weld pak 100 hdlincoln ranger 225gxt ac/dcoxy/acetylenepuroxcw202 victor fc100harris model 85harrismodel 16oxweld w24roxweld w17
Reply:I sure couldn't testify to the metal type either, but when I tore my old post vise down to clean it up it had forge welded written all over it. Machine (stamp) forged I imagine as big as the parts are but you could aslo see evidence of where the craftsmen had wiped some of the high spots or ridges down with a rod to smooth things up. Pushed molten metal back into the V's where the halves came together and such. Without knowing I picture precast pieces of steel being heated in a forge, thrown into a receiving die and then Wham, some guy hits the trip on a huge drop hammer and beats the crap out of it .. Fip it over wham it some more, jerk it out, smooth it up and send it on down the line.  Nice fairy tale eh? When I cut and shortened the post on mine it welded like butter with 70S-6. Of course that was way down low on the post and not up at the vise end. While I was cleaning it up, cutting and grinding the lower end of the post to shorten it subtle lines appeared that made it apparent that the knobbed end of the foot had been forge welded in too. The foot had (at one time) like a six inch tapered wedge end that was slipped up between two corresponding tapered sections that had to have been then stamped or hammered into to one nearly homogenous section. I used a flap wheel to chase the lines just for sheets and giggles. Obviously put together good enough that nothing ever comes apart but the lines were visible. Pretty neat."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:thats my thoughts on it too, forge weld city. i was looking for a stamp or engraved date and dont see one. reasearch tells me its a 4th gen vise.be neat if it was an early one[mid1890s]lincoln weld pak 100 hdlincoln ranger 225gxt ac/dcoxy/acetylenepuroxcw202 victor fc100harris model 85harrismodel 16oxweld w24roxweld w17
Reply:one of the challenges of forge welding is to keep the impact high enough to permit the weld but not hard enough to reshape the metal and deform the product . the hammer blows neccessary to shape a piece are too  strong to weld it.
