This is going to be one of my next projects. I stayed up all night last night designing this trailer, Still not done, but getting closer. And of course I had to do it, I copied and pasted it into my rid welding bed design to see how it was going to look. Mind you this is the 72 Chevy bed, not the 94, it is shown with 34.5" tires. The neck is a bit long, I'm going to shorten it by about 3 1/2 feet, and I am also going to add some bracing under the sides of the trailer, but other than that how you see it is pretty much how it will be once I can build it.72 Chevy Cummins Project94 3500HD Welding Rig build Sold NOV 2011

Reply:Thanks guys, also going to throw this shot in there, I decided to run a piece of 6" sch 40 down the trailer as a back bone to keep it from twisting, from what I understand it makes the trailer ride a lot better when you have a tall load on it, it will take out some of the sway.It will add some weight, but not too much. The trailer is mostly going to get used for hauling raw materials to my shop, and hauling finished products to customers. Especially once I get my CNC Plasma Table. Also I am really wanting to buy a Backhoe, the economy being the way it is there are some good deals to be had on them out there right now.I will also point out that the ramps are 60" long each, and I'm playing around with different ideas to assist in folding and unfolding them.72 Chevy Cummins Project94 3500HD Welding Rig build Sold NOV 2011

Reply:Not sure, but the axles look a little too far to the rear. If you are including the rear beaver tail drop in the calculation, Keep in mind that ridgid material will not be touching the rear of the trailer. And if you put a backhoe on the flat deck, that is where I would calculate from. Maybe??? (Hopefully you will understand what I am trying to convey)"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"

Reply:Oh and how I determined the placement of the axles is that they are centered at 2/3 of the cargo deck. The rational for doing so is that it will put 1/3 of the weight on the rear axle, 1/3 on the front axle, and 1/3 to the truck.Edited to add:This is figuring I will have about 5,500 lbs available capacity on the truck, and that would be about 3500-4000 lbs of load & trailer that would have to be before the 12 foot mark on the cargo deck. With a backhoe nosed on, and the boom lowered, I think the weight will be pretty well evenly distributed.Last edited by MrBeast; 06-20-2011 at 11:35 PM.72 Chevy Cummins Project94 3500HD Welding Rig build Sold NOV 2011

Reply:After posting that it may be 12" but I know for sure it's 19#/ftIt is a nice trailer, the welds could be better. Typical of mass production by cheap labor.Leo

Reply:Are you sure your center lights are legal? Three center lights signifies that you are over 80", but does the additional 2 (making 5) negate that?My name's not Jim....

Reply:The reason I brought it up is the rules I've read said 3 lights.  I don't recall reading "minimum of 3" or "at least 3".  If 5 is alright, then go for it.My name's not Jim....
Reply:DOT doesn't seem to care as long as you have at least the minimum. Of course if you have 50 lights instead of the minimum 3 you need, and one light is out, they still write you a ticket..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. I took the lazy way out and bought ours. It is kind of hard because my truck has the end of the frame bobbed, but there will probably be a time my dad tows it with his truck and he has a full bed on his so I need to make sure it wont smack it seeing as how his truck is a 2008 and its paid for, me thinks that would make him kind of mad!

Reply:That trailer better wait till the Cummins swap, your old 6.5 might get up and walk off on you if it gets hitched to that.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:CEP what are you running with a 500 cummins, Pete, KW etc?My granddad had a 24ft gooseneck built years ago. Two 7K axles and no dovetail. We pulled it with a 76 F150 4x4 with a V8 and 4 speed, oh and when he first got the trailer, truck still had 900-16 gumbo mudders on it.Last edited by MrLeadMan; 06-21-2011 at 05:14 PM.Ranger 250 GXTSmith Gas Axe

Reply:Originally Posted by SmokinPRanchAll 4" will be 4 1/2" O.D. but it could be schedule 80 or higher or maybe even 4 1/2" tubing with a specified wall thickness. That's why I just stated the O.D. I didn't want to assume it was schedule 40 since I can't verify I.D. or wall thickness.I get out there today I'll do some more poking around see if I can get a look at wall thickness somewhere. BTW, did you do the 3D work in core AutoCAD? That's nice looking work. Al
Reply:Here's another picture that might show a few other things. The fella I bought the trailer from owns a large equipment auction and hauls all kinds of heavy equipment on the same trailer. The ramps are one section, spring assisted. With the beavertail the approach angle is nice and shallow. Reply:What does your deck height come out to?  You said 12" I beam, then a 2x4 box on top of that and you'll have 1.5" thick boards... going to be pretty tall.  If you've not looked into it already, research goosenecks with pierced beam cross members.  Getting the deck as low as possible makes it so your ramps don't have to be so long... you won't be as tall and it will be easier to load and easier to climb onto.  I've had a few Goosenecks over the years, I'll never have another one that isn't "low profile".  Also, when you go to buying wheels and tires, you want as low profile as you can get.  My current trailer has a 33" deck height.  Its a Moritz.http://www.moritzinternational.com/f...s-f-series.phpI admire your ambition and wanting to build your own trailer but for me it just never made sense, I could buy the finished trailer cheaper than I could build it.  I also didn't want the liability.Miller 250x & Lincoln V205-TSmith Oxy-Prop torch
