I have this hardinge cataract lathe from around 1920 ish. Cleaning it up now and the pulley wheel is chipped. I have tig, mig but no o/a. Can I do something here? I could just leave it but since I have some welding ability I thought I'd throw it out there. I do have plenty of si/bronze. Thanks to the esposa! Finally got an O/A setup
Reply:It looks like a flat belt drive (from the cieling), I'm not sure I would do anything if it still works.   What are the indexing holes for?  It could be built up after serious preheating, postheating and OA, but it might not be worth it.  If something goes wrong it could just totally self destruct. Can You put a V belt pulley on it, or is it important to keep it original?
Reply:Indexing holes are for gear cutting and the like. As for repair, the silicon bronze might be an option with Tig, pre and post heat.....but it will have its share of risks. If it were me with your capability, I would machine off the flange, and shrink on a new one machined from steel. If it were mine in my own shop....it would get welded up with CI filler and OA using standard practice.
