I have been looking for a while for a better O/A setup than my current "Pro Weld". I waa hoping to find a good used Victor setup, but so far nothing has fit the bill. I have found a used Harris setup and I am considering going to look at it. Is there anything I should know about Harris, is it as good or better than Victor?Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:I have a 2-stage Craftsman, made by Harris, which is about 35 years old. I got them new and have replaced the diaphrams once, about 8 years ago. The parts are still available thru Harris. Basically a good solid torch set.
Reply:If you do a search for Harris, like This One, you should find some good threads giving opinions about the brand; I don't recall any being bad.
Reply:I had a Harris rig years ago and liked it but not as well as Victor. You know about opinions I'm sure but mine is nothing beats Victor.
Reply:I have some Harris equipment and love it. Every torch or regulator I have used from Harris has been high quality. As long as the outfit you are looking at has not been abused, you should be fine. Reply:I have a set of the Harris Pro Series, I think 2400, and they are some serious heavy and heavy duty guages. Benn using them in the shop for over ten years and not a hiccup. But those are treated very carefully, though."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Thanks for all the replies, sounds like I should go take a look. He doesn't know what the model or torch size is and says he never used this particular one himself, sounds like it is company equipment he is getting rid of. There is a cutting torch, welding/brazing torch and tips, hose, Harris gauges, fairly large tanks, can't tell exactly from the picture how big but they are bigger than mine. There is a nice cart too. Reply:Something to think about: You can get a brand new Harris Steelworker Deluxe outfit for $180 shipped to your door and guaranteed to work. Make sure that you can get the tanks filled where you get your gasses (customer owned vs. leased tanks). $350 could be worth it though if everything is in great condition.IAMAW Local 330Airco 300 AC/DC HeliwelderAirco Dip-Pak 200 with Profax spool gunPowr-Kraft AC225Everlast PowerArc 200stBuffalo Forge No.21 drill pressSpeedglas 9100xxAirco, Oxweld, Purox, Victor torchesLincoln Ranger 8
Reply:Well I went and got it today. The torch is a Model 85 with a #72 cutting attachment and a 6290-1 cutting tip. I also got 3 welding tips (3,5&7) and a rosebud. And a cart. The tanks are 1/2 full. I got it all for $325. The Acet gauge did leak though, and I have dropped it off for a rebuild ($22.00). Can anyone tell me what size my tanks are? The Acet is 26" high x 7.5" and the Oxy is 31" high x 7" That is measured to the bottom of the safety cap threads since I don't have safety caps. After looking at a pdf of cylinder sizes, my oxy appears to be 80CF and my acet appears to be 100 CF.Last edited by bigb; 07-07-2010 at 11:07 PM.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:Looks like a good deal, you will be happy with Harris. Have you found out where to get the tanks filled?IAMAW Local 330Airco 300 AC/DC HeliwelderAirco Dip-Pak 200 with Profax spool gunPowr-Kraft AC225Everlast PowerArc 200stBuffalo Forge No.21 drill pressSpeedglas 9100xxAirco, Oxweld, Purox, Victor torchesLincoln Ranger 8

Reply:Depends on how good you are at cutting. I'd get a tip cleaner at least.
Reply:It's best to have tips designed for the size metal you're cutting or welding; a larger cutting tip uses more gas and isn't as clean cutting but 'works' in an emergency; for welding, too small won't work and too large is a problem too. The cutting tips, which run from 00 up, used to retail at about $10 each, IIRC. I haven't bought any welding tips in years, so won't even guess about them; I think they start at size 0 for this torch.

Reply:I got to try the torch today, tried cutting some train rail with the #1 tip. It did it but it took a loooooong time. I think I might need a #2 or #3 for train rail.Anyways it works great, and the handle is bigger than my old Pro Weld. I have big hands and I am always bumping the valves with them.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car. |
