I built this bumper last year for my truck, and I have a friend that wants me to build him one.My question is, where the tube is welded to the bracket that mounts the bumper to the frame. Would it be better to cut a hole and run the tube thru the plate, and weld it, making the tube one piece, or do it like I did mine, and just cut the tube, and weld it to the mounting plate?
Reply:Not much difference really in this application- may save you some time by just having to make the corner bends in one long piece rather than cutting and welding the sections together.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:That is what I was thinking Broccoli. Cutting the hole with a plasma cutter would speed things up a little more as well. One more reason to buy a plasma cutter.thanks

Reply:In my mind's eye it would be better to do it as one solid piece of tubing because if you bump into something there's no chance of it breaking at the weld, it will just bend the tubing.

Reply:Alright. Thanks for the help on this design. Both pieces of tube will run the the mounting plates, and the trailer hitch will be mounted under the tube and mounted on plate steel, that is of course welded to the tube. Now to order the Hypertherm 45, and another tubing bender.I appreciate the advice.T. |
