I am going to store the following in my garage up against the wall. I am gonna start stocking 300' of 20'x.120x1.75'' tubing, 100' of 20'x.120''x1.5''tubing, 60' of 20'x.120''x1'' tubing, and a 4'x8'of 1/2'', and 1/4'' plate steel. The plate steel will be cut to 2'x2'x8' sheets.I was thinking I could lean the plate steel in front of the tubing, on one end of the rack, and be able to drag what tubing I needed out without the plate interfering, from the other end. I guess I could have the first tube rack one foot off the floor and lay the plate on the bottom of the rack.I am open to all suggestions of design and materials used to build this rack. I think under 3-4ft in height would work.lThanks for the help.T.
Reply:I would put the plate against the wall with the rack for the tubing in front of it. That way you could lift whatever piece of tubing you needed off the rack instead of sliding it out the end the whole 20'. You have a lot more pieces of tubing to get to than you have plate.Sounds like you have a pretty good size project in mind, or are you just wanting to have a bunch of material on hand just in case? I think I smell a project brewing though. We're not too far apart either.Someone gave me an angle iron frame for a set of steps and I welded a piece of angle iron vertically onto the toe of each tread(each side), along with some diagonal bracing to make a rack for my scrap iron. It's made from 1.5 x .25 material, something like that may suit your purpose. It's stable and keeps the pieces in a staggered arrangement stair stepped up. Works for me, cheap and easy too.Last edited by Bistineau; 07-14-2011 at 04:41 PM.
Reply:Hey Bistineau, Welcome to WW. I live over in south Shreveport.I haven't decided if this rack is gonna roll, or stay put. I think I am just gonna lay the plate down on the bottom, and that way I can cut what I need off without having to move anything. T.
Reply:You might also look at the double track adjustable shelving standards and brackets. We use those in the shop for any number of things. The nice thing about using it for the material racks is that if you need to later add more space for more material you can easily adjust the racks to match. I forget exactly how much the individual brackets can hold, but we have a lot of heavy stuff on racks mounted on 12" and 16" centers..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
