Hey I just got a new ranger 250 gxt and have been doing some jobs with it just stick welding. I understand that I can tig weld w/o a hi freq box. But how is this done? Do I just get any old air cooled torch and just scratch start? How do I control gas flow? What are my other options?

Reply:I'm not familiar with that machine, but at a minimum you can use a basic scratch start tig rig to do DC tig. Tozzi did a good post on his rig a while back.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...hlight=scratchAs he shows you will need an aircooled torch with a gas valve, or you could use a standard aircooled torch if you turned on/off the gas at the reg, but you'd waste a lot of gas that way most likely. Your machine may allow the use of a remote pedal to control the amps or a finger tip controler..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:DC- scratch start tig, thats how I tig with my Idealarc.Steel and stainless steel. You should have a torch with a gas valve on it.You'd be suprised how nice you can tig weld this way.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:i've got a size 17 air cooled tig rig with the gas valve on it, they're not too expensive. your not doing aluminum with this rig, just stainless, mild, and most alloys, like alloy 20. most of the new inverters even have it set up to " scratch start" its called lift arc. just rest your cup on the pipe or plate, the come down and just touch the metal, then lift up. i'm doing pipeing for a chemical company right now that 10% of the welds get xrayed and theres no problems doing it this way. alot easier than dealing with a pedal. i even use my tig rig with my lincoln portable doing the same thing and the only problem i have is occasionally dunking the tungsten, which happens no matter what your power source is. the main thing about the gas valve is remembering to shut it off when your done, it sucks when you go to lunch and come back to an empty bottle.. |
