Where to get list of old welders?

Reply:I spend too much time looking around on Craigslist, and what I have concluded is that there are an astounding variety of makes and models.   Even if you only stick to the top brands, they produce welders for a few years, discontinue them, etc.  A good example that someone mentioned on a board recently was the existence of a CC-only XMT 304.  All current XMTs are CC and CV.  I had known that for a while, but that was news to some people.  The XMTs are an example of where there are so many different models, that it is non-trivial to figure out what you actually have in the photo.  I finally wrote up a half page of notes just on the XMT models, so you can imagine what would be entailed in listing just the various models of one company.The suggestion of looking at the manual on line was right on.   That should tell you quite clearly what the machine capabilities are.   On the Miller page, if you type in the model and serial number, you should get the exact manual for that unit.If I am specifically looking for a welder, I keep a mental list of what I have in mind, as generally there are multiple welders that can fill the bill.Yes, it would be nice if somebody had a spreadsheet that listed discontinued welder models, and a summary of their capabilities.  It could be a huge spreadsheet, however, especially if you go back more than 20 years.   Even if somebody wanted to make such a spreadsheet, it would almost by definition be incomplete, especially taking into account things like 460V only models and other variants.Happy hunting.RichardLast edited by raferguson; 03-16-2013 at 12:39 PM.Sculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge

Reply:Hobart actually published a nice hardback book about the world history of welding, starting at its origin.   I have it at home and can't recall the name off hand.  I can take a pic of the book when I get home,  if you're interested.However, the book primarily uses old photos of Hobart brand machines, but its a great historical resource.   I bought it from Hobart online about a year or two ago.   It's sitting on my coffee table.  (The wife really loves that! ) "Hey I didn't come to look and learn, I came to turn and burn....
