I have been tig welding for a while and am pretty decent, but I'm just now am wanting the use silicon bronze.  I tried it today and had my machine at 100 amps and it worked OK and i was using it on some 1/8 inch steel and wanted to know if that was to high of amps because i was kind of melting the base metal and i know you aren't supposed to do that with silicon bronze. I was also welding with my machine on DC.
Reply:With brazing, you don't want to melt the base metal, just get it hot enough for the rod to melt in.  If you have a footpedal, get the base metal hot and back off to keep from melting the base.  If you have done any gas brazing, it is pretty much the same.  Without a pedal or hand control, just keep backing off the control to get the same effect, or move the arc along once the rod starts to melt in.
Reply:if you are tig welding, the amps is determined by what you need to get a puddle. then feed the puddle..if you are brazing you use the torch to get the metal hot but you dont melt it..
