Reply:I'm going back to Calgary Canada after welding school to finish off the last month of my work visa there..was hoping I could get in with a welding shop for 4 weeks for some unpayed experience! I guess there's no harm in calling company's and asking eh?
Reply:Absoluteley nothing wrong with asking. There are no stupid questions only stupid answers, but like shovelon said it would be a liability issue if you got hurt. Mention that you understand that in your phone calls and offer to work for whatever they would be willing to offer, and let them know your just looking for experience. Good luck bud I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:The key word will be 'intern'.  That's a more accepted way to work for free. But like the others said, there are insurance issues so don't get discouraged if it takes a little effort to find a spot.
Reply:Here is an unusual angle. Enroll in a local community college that has a welding program and sign up for the internship class. Each school usually has an internship corodinator, if work experience is required for a degree programs. Here in WA state, the employeer can get $5/week insurance for interns through the Dept of Labor & Industry. The state has specific guidelines for interns ...must be work related training, educational, and not floor sweeping or coffee making.____________________Retro_shopLincoln V300 ProLincoln LN-25 w/ Tweco #4 gunCobramatic 150-003 w/ push-pull gunMiller Dynasty 200
Reply:In Canada we pay people to work.  It is highly unlikely that you would be able to work for someone in Calgary for free.  They would think you were nuts nevermind the workers compo problems.  The unemployrment rate in Alberta is down around 3 % as stated by the news last week.   If you have two arms and are breathing you will find real work.
Reply:I am sure shops (not big companies) would be willing to take you in but I doubt they will let you weld stuff for them much. You will probably end up sweeping floors, cleaning machines and tables, and taking out the trash.  If you find a nice guy he may let you try welding some scrap on the side for awhile.
