I've got a silly little project I'm going to do this weekend, a trash-can cart on wheels where I can roll my cans out to the street on trash day. I've got scrap 1/2" square tubing, Four 8" pneumatic tires, axle rod and the vision in my head. What I can't see though is how to attach the solid front axle on wheels to the wagon part and still have it where the front tires will turn like pulling a wagon. Anyone have hints or tricks I can do to make this hookup where it will turn ?
Reply:a single centered pin from the axle to the frame would do what you're looking for. the only thing you've got to do is make sure there is a bushing/spacer between the two to make it so the frame and axle don't contact. There are no problems. Reply:You should go to a local nursery and see how their carts work.If you use a single pin centered on the axle (how older wagons were made), then it is prone to tipping in tight turns (not sure if this is a concern for you or not).My son's wagon just has a handle hinged to the front, and the front two wheels caster.  That way, there's always a wheel under each corner.  My gardening wagon has a steering system that is more like what you'd find in a go-cart.
Reply:you can make a front bolster like on the radio flyer wagons. it's still center pin, but it would probably work. http://www.radioflyer.com/k29-0000002.html?sid=5www.thefusionsolution.com
Reply:Or you could use the wheels that you have in the rear...Then go get some swivel mount wheels for the front with just a straight axle welded solid and let the wheels turn for you..http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...029422_1029422Then build another just like it and sell it to a neighbor to get back the cost of 4 swivel wheels.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Ok well thanks guys. I had in my mind of welding something like a 4"x4" piece of flat metal on to the top center of the front axle, then weld the same size piece to the bottom front center of the cart and sandwich something like what a kitchen lazy susan spins on between the two pieces of flat metal and secure both with a bolt through the metal of the sheet metal..... Just have no clue where to find something small enough like the lazy susan bearing piece to sandwich between them.

Reply:Zapster..... hilarious that mentioned what you did about the neighbor. I built a trash can cart last year and welded 3" hard rubber caster wheels, 2 fixed mount and two swivel mounts in the front. My neighbor wants one too, so I hatched the idea to build another one for me because these little wheels bog down in the mud when you pull it across the yard and I've cussed that design ever since. Got the 4 pneumatic 8" tires/wheels for free and now trying to put a new one together in my mind to incorporate them.
Reply:it's really not hard to make cart spindles. Just a vertical pipe with a horizontal bolt(spindle for the tire) and a horizontal piece of flat stock 90* from the bolt. Axle has U shaped pieced on each end that a bolt or pin goes through both ends of the U with the Pipe in the middle. Here is a link to something similar to what I'm talking about.http://rdswebs.net/reliablegokarts.c...roducts_id=462then you mount you handle to the axle and tie rods between the spindles and the handle and you're set. There are no problems.
