Not really a project but it does show some work flow and may be of interest to someone. This is a retaining bracket that bolts to some square tube. It holds down a hinged part and is subject to pulling/pushing action lengthwise. Over time it fatigued and broke at the bend. I thought about completely replacing the bracket due to the weak design... 90 degree bends with holes in them... a recipe for tearing. After some thought this is what I came up with. Designed the rib in Alibre Design and cut it on the plasma table. I did bevel out both sides of the crack before welding but didn't upload that picture. The rest it fairly self explanatory. Reply:You did a great job figuring out that repair. That is not likely to break again. When I saw it, I thought, how would I make it stronger besides just welding it and it all comes down to how it bolts on and what interference there are. I was stumped, but you made it clear. Good job.

Reply:I thought it was the underside of a dump bed type trailer. Looked like the broken bracke was used to keep the bed from tilting until the pin was removed. Reply:at first glance I thought dump bed, but then I looked closer, and have never seen a dump bed with cable lifts. Nor have I seen one with a curved underside. not to mention that looks like fiberglass not metal. There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:Nice Job Forhire,Just out of curiosity, how long does it take to design a simple part like that in your CAD software? I understand that proficiency with the software is a factor in time needed but all things being equal and possessing decent skills with the program, how much time would you figure on adding to the project/job cost to design the part for your PAC table to read? Thanks in advance for the answer.Eric
Reply:Fixed it looks plenty strong.  Design wise, a T shape would have been better, rather than the 90* bend.  Or better yet (design by CPA), a flat strap bolted to the upper arm to intersect with the pin.Nice fix, I'm curious too about what it's on.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
